From Crisis to Collaboration: Leafr Report Calls for a New Model to Deliver Corporate Sustainability

London - A new report by sustainability consultancy network Leafr warns that sustainability teams across Europe are reaching a tipping point - but also outlines how the sector can recover. The True State of Sustainability 2025 calls for a shift from isolated in-house delivery to a more connected, collaborative model that combines regulation, external expertise, and technology.

Drawing on the views of 450 senior sustainability leaders, the report finds that teams remain under-resourced, overstretched, and struggling to turn ambition into measurable action.

Key findings include:

Only 11% of sustainability leaders believe their organisation will meet its targets.

76% say their teams are not adequately resourced.

91% have been asked to take on responsibilities beyond their area of expertise.

C-suite support has halved since 2024.

Leafr Co-founder Gus Bartholomew said:

"The data confirms what we hear from our community every day. Sustainability teams cannot deliver net zero on their own. They are under-resourced, pulled in too many directions, and forced into compliance work at the expense of impact. Unless leadership, regulators, and investors align behind a pragmatic model that values environmental outcomes as much as financial ones, targets will remain out of reach."

Rather than dwell on the shortfall, Leafr's report points to how businesses can reset their approach.

- Better use of AI and digital tools - to manage data, measure impact, and free time for innovation.

- Regulatory alignment - to turn voluntary pledges into measurable progress.
