Amateur Group Faces Professional Stage Competition

In November, the Musical Theater Society Berlin (MTS Berlin) will be bringing heels, heart, and harmonies to Berlin with their production of K!nky Boots - a show about the bravery of self-expression and accepting people for who they are. For this amateur English-speaking musical theatre group, founded in 2019, it's a really exciting (and ambitious!) opportunity to showcase their skills. But as the cast and crew are spending time rehearsing, building sets, and making costumes, they are facing a huge challenge: The professional touring production of K!nky Boots announced that they will be performing in Berlin a few weeks later.

For the members of MTS Berlin, the timing couldn't be worse. Tickets for the MTS Berlin production, staged at Ballhaus Prinzenallee, are much cheaper than the professional production, as it is important to them that the glitz and glamor remain accessible to the local community. However, the cast and crew are still concerned that potential audience members might save their money for the glossy West End production. For this small company that relies almost entirely on ticket sales and volunteer effort, the prospect of reduced attendance is incredibly worrying.

Producer and founder, Lauren, is very supportive of the arts coming to Berlin, but is understandably concerned about the impact on her company, which she built from scratch as an expat: "It is really exciting that Berlin is welcoming more and more West End productions to their stage, but for us, it was a shock 3 months into our process to find out via social media that K!nky Boots is coming to Berlin shortly after our production."

For many ensemble members, MTS Berlin is a home where they can express themselves comfortably among like-minded people. Many, like founder Lauren, are expats. Others are native Germans seeking a creative space outside of the monotony of a 9-to-5 job. Rehearsals buzz with laughter into the night and over countless weekends, with members relishing in the challenge of nerves, learning choreography, and putting on a fabulous show on a shoestring budget.
While the professional K!nky Boots is bound to impress with costume changes and set pieces, the MTS Berlin version offers a more intimate experience: the chance to see friends, colleagues, and neighbors put their whole hearts into something they love. Hopefully, in a city like Berlin, there's space for both.
As opening night on November 21st rapidly approaches, the group hopes that Berliners will support them despite the professional production being only a few weeks away. They don't want to compete with the professionals, only to have fun on stage, tell a meaningful story, and give the audience members a reason to clap, dance, and strut along with them.
