QUOTE FROM THE GAMING AGAINST VIOLENC PROGRAM
"We continue to be amazed by the creativity of the non-violent video game ideas we receive from teams around the world. This year, we announced 16 Finalist Teams from 9 countries at the Games for Health Europe Conference in Eindhoven. We are pleased that the five winning games represent four different countries and that each team had its own creative vision of what a video game about healthy communication looks like. We are eager to share these uniquely engaging games with you when they are published."
Drew Crecente, Program Director, Gaming Against Violence
QUOTE FROM THE FIRST PLACE WINNING TEAM
"Our game was truly a two-generation effort - that's why we call ourselves the 2GEN Team. My daughter and I poured a lot of love and dedication into it. For us, games are a powerful way to inspire curiosity and learning, and we are thrilled that our very first visual novel has been recognized by Jennifer Ann's Group, an organization so committed to the well-being of children and young people. This award motivates us to keep creating experiences where fun and education go hand in hand, especially in such an important field as Communication. As the only Latin American team in the competition, this recognition is also a great personal pride."
ABOUT THE GAME DESIGN CHALLENGE AND WINNING GAMES
These video games encourage players to explore, examine, and evaluate the importance of communication for young people and their communities. Interactive video games are a uniquely compelling approach to engaging and empowering young people about complex issues.
Exploring nuanced concepts through video games has been shown to be more effective than traditional approaches to learning. Jennifer Ann's Group's use of intentionally designed prosocial video games through the Gaming Against Violence program is an evidence-based and award-winning approach to violence prevention.
Communication, like previous game themes about resilience, critical thinking, and social connectedness, is considered a protective factor against violence. Protective factors are
characteristics that may decrease the likelihood of young people experiencing or perpetrating violence in the face of trauma or adversity. (Source: CDC)
The communication games from this year's game design challenge focus on conflict resolution, fact-sharing, and healthy relationships. Through conflict resolution, players learn how to resolve differences peacefully by helping them see issues from a variety of perspectives. Fact-sharing
through games benefit local and global communities by teaching players how to effectively use communication strategies to overcome and prevent misinformation. Finally, developing strong communication skills help game players foster and maintain healthy relationships with their family, friends, and partners.
These new games about communication will undergo some additional development work before they are published. For more information about communication and the communication game design challenge please visit the contest website at https://Communicating.Games.
