International "Scent Art Festival" to take place in Riga

RIGA, September 22 - From October 10 to 12, the creative factory "Veldze" (Matīsa Street 8) in Riga will host one of the first international olfactory art festivals in Europe - the "Scent Art Festival 2025". This unique event will bring together 40 artists from nine countries: Latvia, Argentina, Norway, China, New Zealand, Finland, Portugal, Germany, and Greece. The festival is dedicated to the exploration of scent as an art medium and its connection with other senses-sight, sound, and taste. It will offer a broad program including an exhibition, live performances, aromagraphy workshops, lectures, and a scented tour of Riga.

The festival's director, Sandris Murins emphasizes: "It is a true pleasure to see so many artists from all over the world coming together to showcase their works at the 'Scent Art Festival.' This event is a testament to the growing interest in interdisciplinary art forms that challenge traditional boundaries. We believe that scent, as a powerful and often overlooked sense, has immense potential to create new, immersive artistic experiences. This festival is a crucial step in establishing a platform for artists who are at the forefront of this innovative field."

The festival's special guests will be the Argentinian artists Maria Zegna, Bruno Mesz, and Sebastian Tedesco, who will bring a unique scent organ to Riga. This instrument will be used in five performances, including a gastronomic performance, a contemporary music piece, a combination of video and scent, and an improvisational music session.

Maria Zegna states: "The 'Scent Art Festival' is a unique and long-awaited event in the art world. It's like a magnet that pulls together many artists, including me and my colleagues from Buenos Aires, who are eager to share our work and exchange ideas. In our practice, we see scent as a powerful medium capable of conveying deep emotions and narratives. We are thrilled to bring the scent organ to Riga and explore the fascinating synergy between scent, sound, visual, and taste with the audience."

Event Schedule by Day:
October 10: The festival will open with an exhibition launch. The exhibition will feature paintings, graphics, installations, sound installations, and short movies that incorporate the olfactory experience.
October 11: There will be a chance to experience performances where scents are integrated into sound, music, and dance.
October 12: On the final day of the festival, performances and poetry readings will take place, with scent included as a significant component.

More information about the festival can be found on Sandris Murins Instagram profile and the "Scent Art Festival" Facebook event page. Publicity photo of the scent organ is credited to photographer Gustavo Sosa Pinilla.
