Hands struggling with your phone? Hemp cream has 'great potential' to help

Elderly people who are struggling to use their mobile phones due to osteoarthritis in their hands could benefit from hemp creams and gels, according to scientific studies.

The study, published in Nature, found that transdermal hemp-based gels can improve hand pain and grip strength in people with symptomatic hand osteoarthritis.

HempWell, a leading supplier of hemp-based products, has long known of the connection between pain relief and such creams.

Professor Mike Barnes, a former Consultant Neurologist and currently the Scientific Advisor to HempWell, said the study "shows the great potential for these gels and creams."

Professor Barnes added: "This study is an excellent demonstration that topical hemp-based products can really help people with arthritis in their hands.

"The study showed significant improvement not only in pain but also in grip strength, fatigue, stiffness and anxiety.

"This shows how useful a simple gel can be - being able to move the hand with less pain can really help with daily tasks like cooking, dressing and holding and using a mobile phone, for example.

"Certainly, it is just an exploratory study but one that shows the great potential for these gels."

This pilot study demonstrated that transdermal hemp-based products may provide some promise for a safe treatment option for symptomatically active hand osteoarthritis.

The study backs up previous research on the potential therapeutic effects of hemp-based products on chronic pain.

For example, a 2018 review (Bruni, Della Peppa, Oliaro-Bosso et al) of 79 clinical studies found that there was moderate-quality evidence these products may be effective in reducing chronic pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

Study statistics:
• 15 people completed the trial
• Pain ratings were significantly reduced over time from the pre-treatment baseline
• These included reductions in current pain, average pain and maximum pain
