Sci-Fi Series Explores Progress, Control, and Belief Through Satirical Lens

Independent filmmaker-composer Robert Iolini has launched ART e FACT, the first film in a self-financed sci-fi series exploring artificial intelligence, creativity, and defiance in a repressive world.

"Our characters grapple with real-world problems of creativity, authority, and power in often unorthodox ways," says Iolini.

Blending philosophy, humour, and stylised drama, ART e FACT offers an alternative to mainstream science fiction. Cast and shot entirely in Barcelona and produced entirely outside industry networks, the film is distributed directly to audiences via artefacts.iolini.com.

The next instalment, Café Fallible, continues this DIY approach in Barcelona. Filming begins in January 2026 at the iconic Club Ocaña in the Barrio Gótico, starring local cabaret artists Sara Brown and Santa Catalina (Catalina Parra) in a bilingual Catalan/English production. The film is supported by in-kind contributions from Barcelona's arts community, including venue partnership with Club Ocaña and collaboration with local performers who bring specialised cabaret expertise.

Set in a post-utopian society, Café Fallible follows anti-authoritarian performers pursued by cults, spies, and a mysterious machine. The film blends satire, theatre, and speculative ideas to explore art as a vehicle for knowledge, the tension between progress and control, and the courage to question everything-including your own beliefs.

I'm Robert Iolini. I make art music and independent films, and together with creative producer Emi Morita, we've created the ART e FACTs Film Series.

The series is being made entirely in Barcelona. We shot the first film, ART e FACT, in the city in 2023 with local cast and crew , and it premiered online in January 2025. From here on, each instalment will continue to draw on Barcelona's artists, venues, and rich culture of creativity.

These films are speculative, philosophical, and playful, mixing drama, mystery, and sci-fi. They follow curious, clever protagonists on quests in worlds not so different from our own.

How does creativity reshape the way we live? What happens when we challenge authority and reimagine power structures? Our characters grapple with and try to solve these real-world problems in often unorthodox ways.

Their stories show how every problem, no matter how complex, can be solved with creativity, criticism, and the right knowledge. The thing is, the right knowledge is not so easy to come by. Like the characters in our movies, we took this optimistic approach from developing to producing our first film. And it works!

We're operating independently. Luckily, we have enough knowledge to come up with high concept stories that we can produce with high quality on modest budgets.

We're developing a universe, one film at a time. The next chapter, Café Fallible, begins filming in January 2026 at Barcelona's Club Ocaña, with local cabaret performers bringing their unique expertise to the production.
