Japan: Recent Neural Stem / Progenitor Cell Developments
✅ In August 2025, Sumitomo Pharma & RACTHERA submitted the application for manufacturing and marketing authorization for allogeneic iPS cell-derived dopaminergic neural progenitor cells (raguneprocel) to treat motor-off periods in advanced Parkinson's disease. The therapy was granted priority review under Japan's SAKIGAKE system.
✅ In April 2025, a Phase I/II trial conducted by Kyoto University Hospital showed that allogeneic iPSC-derived dopaminergic progenitors survived, produced dopamine, improved motor scores, and did not form tumours in Parkinson's patients over 24 months.
