Uranium In Situ Recovery (ISR) technology is a method of extracting uranium from underground ore bodies without traditional mining. This technique involves injecting a solution, typically consisting of water mixed with oxygen and bicarbonate or sulfuric acid, into the uranium-rich underground formations through a series of wells. The solution dissolves the uranium as it moves through the ore, creating a uranium-laden liquid called "pregnant solution," which is then pumped to the surface through extraction wells. At the surface, the uranium is recovered from the solution using ion exchange or other chemical processes. ISR is considered less invasive and environmentally disruptive compared to conventional open-pit or underground mining, as it minimizes surface disturbance and tailings generation. However, it requires careful management of groundwater to prevent contamination.
