Turning Invasive Carp Into Opportunity: Missouri Coast Joins MDC in Platte River Harvest
FARLEY, MO - September 3, 2025 - Missouri Coast Fisheries, a conservation-driven company based in Farley, Missouri, is partnering with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) this September to process invasive carp harvested from the Platte River. The initiative highlights how a serious ecological threat can be transformed into sustainable solutions that benefit both communities and local economies. The Missouri Department of Conservation will lead two major removal operations at the Schimmel City Access in Platte County, running from September 8-12 and September 22-26, 2025. Invasive silver carp continue to spread through Missouri waterways, outcompeting native fish, damaging ecosystems, and creating hazards for boaters with their tendency to leap from the water when startled.
Missouri Coast Fisheries is the designated processor for these operations. Instead of discarding the carp, the company will convert them into eco-friendly products that people already use. Current product lines include durable fishing bait, organic fertilizer for gardeners, and natural pet treats. By capturing value from invasive carp, Missouri Coast demonstrates how conservation and innovation can work together to restore river health while creating new markets.
"This project is about more than removing a harmful species," said Greg Trial, CEO and Co-Founder of Missouri Coast Fisheries. "It is about proving that invasive carp can be repurposed into something useful, turning an environmental challenge into lasting value for Missouri families, farmers, and anglers."
The Platte River harvest will also feature Missouri Coast's mobile fish processing system, designed to handle large-scale removals quickly and sustainably. Media and members of the public are invited to attend and see firsthand how harvested fish are converted into products such as fishing bait, Bene-Fishal organic fertilizer, and Barley's Premium Dog Treats. The company continues to develop additional carp-based solutions aimed at broadening the impact of invasive species removal.
The collaboration between Missouri Coast Fisheries and MDC reflects a new model for conservation partnerships in Missouri. By linking ecological goals with economic incentives, the effort helps ensure that invasive carp removal is not only effective but sustainable over the long term. Reducing carp numbers in the Platte River will improve habitat for native fish species, benefit recreational users, and demonstrate a scalable approach to river restoration.
