Acclaimed essayist calls for a return to clarity, solitude, and meaningful storytelling as online noise continues to rise
In a new in-depth interview titled "Between Silence and Story: An Interview with Stefano Maroni," Italian-American author and cultural commentator Stefano Maroni is speaking out about the growing need for thoughtful, reflective media in a world increasingly flooded by noise, distraction, and shallow content.
Known for his acclaimed essays in The Atlantic, Harpers, and The New Yorker, Maroni draws from both personal and professional experience as he calls attention to a quiet crisis in modern communication.
"I don't want to add more noise," Maroni says in the interview. "I want to write things that linger."
This statement lies at the heart of his message: that media, storytelling, and even everyday conversation are being diminished by speed and digital pressure. His concern echoes the numbers. A 2024 Pew Research study found that over 65% of American adults feel overwhelmed by the constant flow of online information. Meanwhile, attention spans have dropped to an average of just 8.25 seconds - shorter than that of a goldfish.
A Voice for Depth in a Shallow Era
Maroni, who now lives a reclusive life in the mountains of northern New Mexico, knows the value of silence. In the interview, he reflects on how relocating from New York to the quiet adobe landscapes near Taos changed his process - and his perspective.
"Solitude helps me see more clearly," he explains. "I think better in stillness."
He advocates for media that invites reflection, not reaction - essays, books, and commentary that make room for complexity and feeling. His most recent book, The Distance Between Us, does just that - offering a meditative look at identity, loneliness, and cultural dislocation in modern America.
But Maroni isn't simply promoting his own work. He's urging others - readers, writers, and cultural observers - to take personal responsibility for the kind of content they create and consume.
"If I'm leading, I hope it's by showing that you don't need to shout to be heard," he says. "You just need to say something worth listening to."
Rethink What You Read, Share and Say
Rather than a fundraising campaign or media splash, Maroni's call to action is quiet - and deeply personal. He invites people to take small, intentional steps:
*
Choose longform over headlines. Set aside time each week to read something reflective.
*
Limit reaction-driven media. Resist the pressure to comment or share instantly.
*
Write more thoughtfully. Whether in emails or essays, take the time to say something that matters.
*
Embrace silence. Carve out space daily for solitude - not to escape, but to see more clearly.
