Regenerative work: Questioning old performance patterns - using new sources of strength
Proverbs such as "No pain, no gain" or "If you want to get high, you have to get up early" still characterize how many people understand performance. These thought patterns originate from a time when long working hours, constant availability and a visible presence were seen as a sign of special performance. But do such ideas still fit into a modern working world characterized by knowledge work, hybrid models and high mental pressure?"Our common understanding of performance is deeply influenced by the industrial age: visible, controllable and linear. Those who work long hours, are constantly available and self-optimize in a disciplined manner are considered to be particularly efficient. But in a knowledge economy, these old ways of thinking fall short," says Dr. Maria Bergler, executive coach and author of the book _Mastering Mental Load_.
A study conducted by health insurer BKK Pronova in 2023 shows just how serious the situation is: 61% of respondents fear being overworked and 30% have already experienced burnout.
Regenerative working as a counter-design
Regenerative working means that work gives you more energy than it costs. "Work can be a source of energy - not just a to-do list. Stress is part of it, but exhaustion doesn't have to be the end result," emphasizes Almut Fischer, coach from Berlin.
The term originally comes from an ecological context: regeneration means the restoration and renewal of systems. Applied to the world of work, this means consciously maintaining and renewing resources instead of using them up.
Examples of regenerative work
* A project manager consciously plans 20% buffer time - and thus becomes more punctual, not slower.
* A team starts meetings with a short energy check: "What is your energy level from 1-10?"
* Individuals start the day with the question: "What can I do today to recharge my battery?"
Such routines promote mindfulness, strengthen self-awareness and make breaks an integral part of the corporate culture.
Coaching as support
For seven years, Almut Fischer has been supporting people in meaningful organizations who often put themselves last. Many of them want to contribute to a future that is capable of making a difference - and in doing so come to the brink of exhaustion. In coaching, personal performance patterns are questioned that were helpful in the past but can now promote burnout. The aim is to establish new, healthy ways of working that are sustainable in the long term.

A first step
If you are exhausted in the evening, take a moment to ask yourself:
"What energized me today - and what drained my energy?"
You don't have to write anything down - the honest answer within you is enough to recognize your personal sources of strength.
"Only those who establish breaks and reflection as an integral part of their work will still be able to perform well tomorrow - as a person and as a company," says Almut Fischer.
