Florida Bar Leader Urges Businesses and Professionals to Focus on Building Strong Foundations for Long-Term Success
Roland Sanchez-Medina, founding partner of SMGQ Law and former President of The Florida Bar, is using his recent feature interview to raise awareness about the importance of strong corporate governance and community leadership in shaping sustainable businesses.
"Big ideas only matter if you can bring them to life," said Sanchez-Medina. "And the way you bring them to life is by building structures and systems that last."
Governance and Leadership Are the Cornerstones of Success
In the interview, Sanchez-Medina reflected on decades of advising businesses on corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, and board governance. He emphasized that clear oversight and ethical leadership are critical for companies, citing data from the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) showing that strong governance can improve long-term company performance by up to 20%.
"Good governance isn't just a legal requirement; it's a competitive advantage," Sanchez-Medina explained. "Boards that ask the right questions and engage thoughtfully help businesses avoid costly mistakes and seize the right opportunities."
The Ripple Effect Beyond the Boardroom
Sanchez-Medina's call to action goes beyond corporate offices. He has spent years serving on the Board of Governors of The Florida Bar, leading the Cuban American Bar Association, and mentoring young lawyers. He has also chaired audit and budget committees for public institutions, including Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
"Giving back to the profession is important," he said. "It's not just about practicing law-it's about shaping the future of the legal community and the communities we serve."
Recent reports by the Florida Chamber of Commerce show that 60% of small and mid-sized businesses lack formal governance structures, a gap that can lead to financial missteps and instability.
What Individuals and Businesses Can Do Today
Sanchez-Medina encourages individuals and businesses to take small but meaningful steps to strengthen governance and leadership in their organizations.
"Start by setting clear expectations," he advised. "Build diverse boards. Hold regular strategy and risk discussions. And most importantly, seek out mentors and be a mentor to someone else. These steps create stronger companies and stronger communities."
He believes these actions are especially urgent in a rapidly changing economy. "The law and the market are always shifting," Sanchez-Medina said. "Adaptability comes from a solid foundation, and that's something anyone can build with intention."
A Call to Action
Sanchez-Medina is urging business leaders, board members, and professionals at all levels to make governance and mentorship a priority this year.
"Everyone can do something," he said. "Whether it's formalizing policies at work, joining a professional association, or volunteering on a nonprofit board-your leadership matters. That's how we build businesses and communities that will stand the test of time.".
