As carbon pressures mount, construction firms turn to material exchange platforms to cut embodied carbon and repurpose waste.

As the construction sector faces growing scrutiny over its carbon footprint, a quiet revolution is taking place in how we handle waste, especially heavy construction materials such as concrete, aggregate, and soil. With embodied carbon under the microscope and developers under pressure to demonstrate sustainability at every stage of a build, the cost of not reusing material is becoming too high to ignore.

The scale of the challenge is vast. Over 62% of the UK's total waste comes from the construction industry, and more than 5 million tonnes of construction and demolition material are still sent to landfill each year. That's not just a waste of valuable resources. It's a missed opportunity to reduce embodied carbon, cut costs, and accelerate the sector's progress toward net zero.

Nexus ReGen, formerly known as Soil Link, has today announced a full rebrand to reflect this changing landscape and its expanded role in supporting a more circular, low-carbon construction economy.

From roads and rail to housing and highways, major contractors are increasingly building material reuse into their project planning and carbon calculators. Repurposing materials on-site or locally isn't just more sustainable; it's fast becoming a commercial and compliance imperative.

With the government's newly announced £700bn Infrastructure Pipeline kicking off a transformative decade for UK infrastructure, the need for smarter sourcing, reuse, and carbon accounting is urgent. Nexus ReGen is quickly becoming the go-to platform for the sector's most forward-thinking players - including Cala Homes, Persimmon Homes (recently onboarded), VolkerWessels, Cemex, and National Highways.

"What we're seeing is a shift in mindset," says Will Rundle, Founder and Managing Director at Nexus ReGen. "It's no longer acceptable to treat bulk excavation material as waste. If it's reusable, then its carbon cost must be accounted for when it's landfilled. Reuse is no longer a nice-to-have. It's a measurable carbon saving and a considerable financial saving too."

Initially created to support the reuse of excess soil, the platform has evolved rapidly to meet broader industry demand. Nexus ReGen now supports the exchange of a full range of heavy construction materials, enabling contractors, local authorities, and infrastructure providers to source and share materials with verified provenance and carbon data.

As embodied carbon is embedded into pre-construction assessments and Scope 3 reporting, platforms like Nexus ReGen are becoming essential tools. The company's new name reflects both its digital growth and its wider mission: to regenerate resources, reduce carbon, and transform how the industry values construction material.

"Our rebrand isn't just cosmetic," says Rundle. "It reflects a fundamental shift in how construction is being planned, priced, and delivered. Waste is a design flaw - and we're here to fix that. Our new name says it all: Nexus represents the vital connection point where projects, suppliers, and sustainability goals converge. ReGen stands for regeneration - not just of materials, but of how the industry thinks about waste, carbon, and value.'
