Homewood Insurance Warns Medspas: Compounded GLP-1 Drugs Could Leave You Unprotected

Medspas are turning to compounded alternatives to meet patient cost expectations.

Medspas are turning to compounded alternatives to meet patient cost expectations.

July 22, 2025 - Naples, FL - With demand for GLP-1 weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Mounjaro at an all-time high, many medspas are turning to compounded, non-FDA-approved alternatives to control costs and meet patient expectations. But this decision carries serious insurance and legal risks.

Homewood Insurance, a leading provider of liability coverage for medical spas and wellness clinics, is warning that using non-FDA-approved compounded medications could void your liability policy-potentially leaving you unprotected in the event of a claim.

"I understand how tempting it can be to reduce costs with compounded versions of popular injectables," says Ralph Schiller, senior broker at Homewood Insurance. "But as someone who works closely with medspa owners-and whose own family is in the business-I can say with confidence: if those drugs aren't FDA-approved, you're putting your patients, your license, and your business on the line."

Recent FDA advisories have highlighted the dangers of compounded GLP-1 medications, including the use of unapproved chemical forms and the rising number of overdose reports. In April 2025, the FDA reinforced its stance by banning compounded versions of these drugs unless there is a verified shortage-currently, there is not.

Medspas offering weight-loss injections are encouraged to verify their treatment protocols and consult their insurance providers to avoid policy exclusions.
