Nigeria Urged to End Sectional Domination and Embrace Accountable Leadership for Sustainable Development
Lagos, Nigeria - As Nigeria and other African nations navigate complex political and economic challenges, growing calls are being made for a shift toward responsible leadership, constitutional adherence, and an end to sectional domination in governance. Analysts, reformers, and concerned citizens are urging both domestic leaders and the international community-particularly developed nations-to support and promote democratic principles that foster equity, justice, and national unity. At the heart of any true democracy lies accountability, inclusiveness, and strict adherence to the constitution. However, in Nigeria's political landscape, the persistent domination of strategic government positions by select regions or groups has proven to be a major obstacle to national development. This sectional favoritism, critics argue, has given rise to widespread corruption, the waste of human resources, economic stagnation, and even violence.
"Sectional gain is only momentary. It neither fosters national integration nor lays the groundwork for sustainable growth," the statement warns. "No country has developed by marginalizing significant segments of its population."
The essence of politics, the press release stresses, should not be the mere acquisition of power but the responsible use of that power for the common good. When properly managed, political power is a catalyst for development. When abused or monopolized by a particular group or region, it breeds resentment, instability, and ultimately, systemic collapse.
"Power is transient," the statement reads. "Any person or group that supports sectional domination is, knowingly or unknowingly, advocating for the eventual breakdown of the system that sustains them. Such individuals or groups must be held accountable."
A sharp critique is also directed at Nigeria's historical pattern of military intervention in civilian affairs. The so-called rescue missions through military coups, constitution drafting, and state creation are described as veiled strategies to secure and consolidate regional or elite interests. These actions, rather than fostering unity and progress, have often delayed true democratic development and misled the public from pressing national priorities.
The release draws inspiration from Arthur Nzeribe's influential book, Nigeria: The Turning Point, which stresses that leadership is serious business involving the lives and futures of millions. Nzeribe asserts that no leader should ever toy with the nation's well-being for short-term or sectional advantage.
This statement calls on Nigerian leaders-politicians, policymakers, and military stakeholders-to abandon outdated, divisive strategies and commit instead to governance that prioritizes equity, national unity, and people-centred development.
The international community, especially developed nations, is urged to support efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions in Africa and to place diplomatic pressure on governments that enable or tolerate undemocratic and sectional dominance.
With Nigeria standing at a critical crossroads, this press release serves as a rallying cry for reform, accountability, and a renewed sense of national purpose. The country's future depends not on the dominance of one section over another, but on shared commitment to justice, service, and democratic ideals.
