Eco Forum Global Guiyang 2025: Guests Discuss Green Development

On July 5, 2025, the Eco Forum Global Guiyang officially opened in Guiyang with great ceremony. Government officials, experts, scholars, and business leaders from around the world gathered to engage in in-depth discussions under the theme: "Harmonious Coexistence Between Humanity and Nature - Jointly Promoting a Global Green Transition."

During the forum, participants freely exchanged ideas on key topics such as "Ecological Culture Communication" and "Global Sustainable Development," sharing forward-looking perspectives and practical recommendations. Their contributions provided valuable insights for advancing global ecological governance and fostering sustainable development worldwide.

Deepening Dialogue and Building Global Consensus on Ecological Civilization

The year 2025 marks the 20th anniversary of the "Lucid Waters and Lush Mountains Are Invaluable Assets" concept. During the forum, many participants highly praised this philosophy proposed by China, offering in-depth interpretations of its profound meaning and practical implementation pathways.

Saysana Sitthiphone, Deputy Minister of Technology and Communications of Laos and Vice President of the Lao-Chinese Friendship Association, noted in an exclusive interview: "The phrase 'Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets' is short but vividly expressive. Human survival depends on the environment, and neglecting it would lead to unimaginable consequences." He was particularly impressed by how Guizhou has leveraged its mountainous terrain and natural resources to develop a digital economy, "especially the growth of intelligent technologies and the big data industry, which offers valuable inspiration for us."

Istvan Jakab, Deputy Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament, discussed the concept from a global perspective: "Arable land is an asset we borrow from future generations. Humanity is undergoing an environmental transition, and we must strengthen our knowledge and technological capacity to adapt to the changes already taking place."

Jonga, Governor of Gaza Province in Mozambique, shared similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of learning from Guizhou's experience: "Lucid waters and lush mountains not only create a pleasant climate, but also drive tourism and economic development."

Green Transition: Exploring Pathways to Sustainable Development

In recent years, Guizhou has consistently maintained excellent ecological quality, ranking among the top in China. The province has effectively charted a green development path that balances both environmental beauty and high-quality growth.

Wu Ning, a researcher at the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, highlighted in an interview that transformation is a global trend. Guizhou has taken the lead in China by prioritizing a "green transition," leveraging its abundant biodiversity and natural resources to drive industrial upgrading. By converting ecological advantages into industrial strengths, the province is not only meeting external demands but also aligning with its internal development goals.

Chen Shiyi, Distinguished Professor at Fudan University and Director of the Green Finance Research Center, emphasized the importance of green finance. He noted that Guizhou, as a biodiversity hotspot, is particularly well-positioned to explore the development of a biodiversity-based financial system, which can help accelerate the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries.

International voices also expressed strong interest in the green transition. Steve Davidson, Strategy Director at Cambridge Zero, University of Cambridge, remarked: "Technological innovation must focus on improving people's lives. Only when green technologies tangibly enhance quality of life can they earn broad public support."

Wechain Jitira, Deputy Governor of Nakhon Ratchasima Province in Thailand, also expressed a strong desire to deepen cooperation with Guizhou: "We hope to expand exchanges and partnerships with Guizhou in forest management and green technology."

Biodiversity Conservation: Building a Resilient Ecological Shield

Biodiversity emerged as a central theme during the forum. Yang Yongping, a researcher at the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, emphasized that biodiversity is not merely an academic concept-it is intrinsically linked to everyday life. He noted that Guizhou is not only rich in biodiversity, but also uniquely integrates this ecological wealth with its vibrant ethnic cultures, demonstrating a distinctive form of ecological wisdom.

Zhang Yan, Director of the China Office of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), highlighted Mount Fanjing in her remarks. She pointed out that the mountain was added to the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas in 2024, showcasing Guizhou's global leadership in areas such as aquatic ecosystem protection, reforestation, and corporate engagement in ecological compensation.

Seny Facinet Sylla, Second Vice President of Guinea's National Transitional Council, also spoke highly of Guiyang and Guizhou's ecological conservation achievements: "We hope to deepen cooperation in the field of environmental protection."

Collaborative Governance: Advancing Practical Implementation of Green Development

Green development cannot succeed without cross-sector collaboration and innovative governance mechanisms. Several forum participants expressed their desire for deeper cooperation and joint action.

Neville Sweijd, Director of the South African Alliance for Climate and Earth System Science, remarked that China's experience offers valuable reference points for developing countries and advocated for enhanced international knowledge-sharing and policy dialogue.

Stuart Maginnis, Deputy Director General of IUCN, noted that Guizhou could serve as a global model for ecological civilization, and that the insights shared at the forum should be disseminated more widely across the globe.

Hou Feng, Chairman of China Water Environment Group and Chinese member of the Eco Forum Global Guiyang Advisory Committee, specifically highlighted the internationally recognized case of the Nanming River restoration. "Guizhou's innovative practices in water environment management deliver environmental, economic, and social benefits, and offer replicable models for Belt and Road countries," he said.

From green transformation to ecological resilience, from biodiversity conservation to green finance innovation, and from regional best practices to international cooperation, the 2025 Eco Forum Global Guiyang has evolved beyond a platform for exchanging ideas-it now serves as a catalyst for global ecological action. Guizhou's efforts are offering vivid examples of sustainable development and leaving an increasingly prominent "Guizhou mark" on the global green development map.
