Pharmacist's Path: Guide to Post-Qualification Career Options
Graduating as a pharmacist is definitely a milestone, but getting prepared for what comes next, the fear of the unknown, can make you anxious. Opportunities after graduating are plenty, but to choose what suits you and your interests best is what you need to be prepared for. Whether you choose to be in the field of clinical practice, research, regulatory affairs, or even settle abroad, the pharmacy career opens doors to infinite rewarding opportunities.Let's explore various post-qualification career options, locally and internationally. We will also decode the licensing pathways globally and allow you to make informed decisions about your future.
● The Pre-registration (Intern) Year
In many countries, it is a mandate to complete an internship before registering as a pharmacist in that country, which is also known as an internship (pre-registration year). This generally happens under the supervision of a registered pharmacist or a preceptor.
This internship bridges the gap between academics and practical clinical knowledge.
A candidate gains real-world experience in dispensing drugs, patient counselling, clinical interventions, and professional collaboration.
This also improves the core competencies in patient care, legal compliance, and communication.
After the completion of the Internship in certain regions like Australia, the candidate must complete Australian Intern Written (https://eliteexpertise.com/blog/step-by-step-guide-to-pass-the-apc-pharmacy-intern-written-exam/) and Oral exams and will be eligible for independent practice after registration with AHPRA (regulatory board).
●Exploring Career Paths in Pharmacy
There are many options to choose from, like:
●● Community Pharmacy: You work in retail pharmacies, such as drug stores and independent pharmacies, where you dispense medication, communicate with Patients, counsel them on their medicines, and dispense Over-the-counter medication.
●● Clinical Pharmacy: Pharmacists in this area work in close collaboration with healthcare teams to manage medication therapies. Their focus is on optimizing medication therapy for individual patients. They can also specialize in many areas of choice, such as paediatrics, oncology, cardiology, diabetology, geriatrics, pain and mental health, neonatal, pregnancy, and so on.
●● Research and Development (R&D): Involved in drug discovery, development of new medications, and evaluating existing products.
●● Regulatory Affairs: Ensuring pharmaceutical products comply with global regulations and standards, preparing documentation for regulatory agencies. Overseeing compliance with laws and regulatory frameworks.
●● Medical Science Liaison (MSL): Bridging the gap between pharmaceutical companies and healthcare professionals, providing scientific and clinical information.
●● Pharmacovigilance/Drug Safety: Monitoring and assessing adverse drug events.
●● Production and Manufacturing: Overseeing the production process, quality control (QC), and quality assurance (QA).
●● Medical, scientific, and regulatory writing: If your interest is in writing, then these are the options to choose from
●● Pharmaceutical Sales and Marketing: Promoting and selling pharmaceutical products to healthcare professionals.
●● Pharmaceutical Research: In academic or corporate settings.
●● Teaching and Academia: Contributing to pharmacy education.
●● Public Health and NGOs: In roles focusing on health access and medication safety.
●● Digital/AI Pharmacy Roles: Integrating data-driven care into modern pharmacy practice.
● How to Improve in Your Chosen Career
In the field of medicine, learning is constant, and upgrading your skills and competencies is a must. No matter your career choice, continuous professional development is a mandate for a pharmacist. Here's how to excel:
●● Certifications & Specializations (e.g., pharmacotherapy, clinical oncology, diabetes care)
●● Professional Networking through pharmacy conferences, LinkedIn, and regional bodies
●● Soft Skills Development: Communication, leadership, and teamwork
●● Language Proficiency: Essential for working or studying abroad
●● Evidence-Based Practice: Staying updated through journals and CPD (Continuing Professional Development)
● Pharmacy Career Abroad
If you want to expand your horizons, dream of a global career. There are many countries with tremendous opportunities for Pharmacists, and many of them, like Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, the UK, and Ireland, face a shortage of skilled workers like pharmacists.
1. Australia and New Zealand- OPRA Pathway (APC)
●● Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) is the board that assess your skills and documentation to see if you fit in the Australian healthcare field.
●● Once your documents are assessed and you clear the OPRA Exam, you will have a gateway to Australia.
●● Register yourself provisionally with the Australian Pharmacy Board.
●● Get your visa approved and migrate to Australia.
●● Complete an internship, and after 75% of the internship, clear your Intern Written/Oral exams.
●● Register via AHPRA
2. Canada - PEBC Exams
●● Get your Document evaluated by PEBC, the regulatory board in Canada
●● Clear your Evaluating Exam and then
●● Pass the Qualifying Exams Part I (MCQ) and Part II (OSCE)
●● Complete your bridging program (mandate for a few provinces) based on your choice of Province
●● Finish your structured internship, jurisprudence exam, and provincial registration (as per the chosen province)
3. Ireland - PSI equivalence exam- TCQR Route
●● Apply to the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI)
●● If you are eligible, submit all the documents required by PSI and get your holistic assessment done.
●● Based on your result in the above step, if PSI does not identify deficiencies, you'll be given a certification of eligibility to practise directly as a pharmacist.
●● In case there are deficiencies found after the holistic assessment, then they enter an aptitude testing phase, either an MCQ exam, or OSCE exam, or both.
●● This process does not require any internship period.
●● After the test, a certification of eligibility to practise is sent to the candidate.
4. Other Pathways: New Zealand (similar to Australia), UK (OSPAP), US (FPGEE + NAPLEX)
Key Considerations Before Choosing a Path
Before making a choice of which path to follow:
●● Select a country of your choice
●● Not all countries accept undergraduate four-year degrees. Therefore, based on the country chosen, get your qualification recognised.
●● Know the entire process, the pros and the cons, and tally the risk-to-benefit ratio and the time consumed.
●● Certain exams are more challenging than others, think and make a decision.
●● The cost of the process must outweigh the salary that you can afford once you start practising in the country of choice.
●● Most countries speak English, and communication is key for a pharmacist. Language requirements (IELTS, OET, PTE, TOEFL, and so on) might be a hurdle, so choose wisely from the options provided for the country.
●● Duration of licensing is another aspect to consider
●● Job prospects and market saturation
●● Family or relocation support
●● For most, self-study can be a hurdle, leaving them with the choice of getting trained from training centres through preparatory courses. Selecting one from the options available can be difficult. Choose the one that is online, flexible, has great experience and trusted trainers with real-time experience, provides study resources that suit the licensing exam, and has thousands of mocks to practise from.
