Virtimo reports positive results from the launch of the Web API for 24-hour supplier change

New Web API interface in the VICOS cloud service automates data exchange and reduces operating costs

Berlin, 06/25/2025 | As a leading provider of services for the energy industry, Virtimo has successfully gone live with the new web API interface including directory service for numerous clients on the Virtimo Communication Service [VICOS]. The implementation enables a highly automated, almost real-time data exchange and thus meets the requirements for the 24-hour supplier change that has been mandatory since June 6, 2025. The new interface complements existing communication protocols such as AS4 and makes a significant contribution to the further digitalization of market communication.

The background to this is the comprehensive digital transformation of the German energy industry, which focuses in particular on accelerating and simplifying cross-market processes. The 24-hour change of supplier – a key requirement of the German Federal Network Agency [BNetzA] and the German Association of Energy and Water Industries [BDEW] – calls for a much faster and more precise exchange of data between all market partners. Further use cases, such as for control actions within the universal order process, will consistently expand the use of Web API technology.

The new web API technology was developed to meet the increasing demands of the energy market. The high degree of automation greatly reduces manual intervention – for more efficient processes and lower operating costs. The interface is highly scalable, can be flexibly adapted to growing data volumes and integrates seamlessly into existing IT systems. Another advantage is security: the use of certificate-based communication from the smart meter PKI and storage in security modules ensure a significantly higher level of protection compared to previous protocols. Following successful testing with pilot clients, the Web API is now available to all VICOS shared service clients as an extension.
