Veteran House Manager Highlights the Unseen Value of Private Service Work and Calls for Broader Respect and Training in the Industry
Beverly Hills, CA - June 23, 2025 - With over 20 years of experience managing the private households of high-profile clients, Nancy Vitolo is speaking out about the need for greater awareness, training, and respect for professionals working in domestic service roles. From house managers and personal chefs to estate staff and executive assistants, Vitolo says these workers are too often overlooked-despite being the backbone of many high-functioning homes and lifestyles.

"We're the ones who make the impossible look effortless," Vitolo said. "But most people don't realise how much expertise it takes to keep a household running smoothly-day in, day out."

Her call to action comes as demand for skilled private service workers grows. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in private household roles is projected to grow 5-10% over the next decade, especially in markets like Los Angeles, New York, and Miami, where high-net-worth families rely heavily on professional staff to support busy lives and complex estates.

The Hidden Demands of a 24/7 Career

Vitolo's own career spans decades and includes managing multiple estates, coordinating private events, supervising staff, and supporting clients across the entertainment, tech, and philanthropic sectors. She is often on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year-something she says is typical of the field.

"This is a lifestyle, not a job," she said. "It requires emotional intelligence, logistical skill, and complete discretion. We work behind the scenes, but our presence is constant."

She notes that most clients don't see the fine details-staff training, vendor contracts, security coordination, or travel logistics-that must be managed with military-level precision.

A Push for Formal Training and Recognition

Vitolo is now encouraging the industry to invest more in formal training, industry standards, and mentorship for new entrants into domestic service.

"There's no handbook for this work," she explained. "You learn by doing. But better training would help us prepare the next generation and reduce burnout."

She suggests more vocational courses, peer networks, and continuing education opportunities tailored specifically to private household management and estate service.

The Cost of Being Overlooked

According to a 2024 survey by the Private Estate Professionals Guild, 68% of house managers reported feeling undervalued or misunderstood by clients and agencies, despite being responsible for multimillion-dollar assets and daily risk management.

The same study revealed that only 21% of domestic professionals had received formal training before entering the field.

"It's easy to underestimate the job when it's done well," Vitolo said. "But if even one part of the system fails, the whole household feels it."

What Individuals Can Do

Vitolo isn't just calling on agencies and staffing firms-she's encouraging individuals to do what they can to improve the perception and conditions of work in private service.

Here's how you can help:

*
Treat household staff with the same respect you'd give any professional. Their work is highly specialised and often emotionally demanding.

*
Provide access to ongoing training or certification. Investing in staff skills benefits the household long-term.

*
Encourage conversations around boundaries, burnout, and wellness. Many domestic roles require emotional labour that goes unnoticed.

*
Mentor someone new to the field. If you're a seasoned professional, share what you know.

"A little understanding goes a long way," Vitolo said. "We're not just managing homes-we're supporting people's lives."

Women In Healthcare Salary Discrepancies Still An Issue - Dr. Darden North Issue …
As quoted in The Gupta Guide by Sanjay Gupta MD, a recent letter in JAMA Internal Medicine showed that male physicians averaged over $56,000 more per year than female physicians for the years 2006-2010. "The disparity in annual income," Dr. North stated, "between male and female physicians is sometimes reflective of the workload or ‘man’ hours spent treating patients. However, from a personal perspective, there are other factors such as the
