Alberta Small Businesses Working Together To Thrive in Challenging Times
Small businesses are struggling to deal with uncertainty and fear in these fraught economic times. While things were trending upwards, all of the economic policies implemented south of the border since the election there have made things harder for them - who at the best of times are often just surviving. But small businesses are working together, to support each other in surviving and hopefully thriving in a new economy.
A case in point, The Alberta Food Processors Association (AFPA) and Studio Lumen Incorporated, a local small photo and video production company, are collaborating on a documentary style video, telling the story of their Made In Alberta program, which promotes products made right here in our province. "When you buy something Made In Alberta, you aren't just helping a few more cents on every dollar stay in the province. Those businesses often invest their money right back into their communities: shopping local themselves, giving philanthropically, or employing someone you know, " says Bianca Parsons, executive director of the AFPA. "We need to do a better job of telling that story, because food producers are one of the biggest employers in the country."
When Studio Lumen's co-owners Jean-Marc Robin and Gillian Williamson learned about the impact that this program could have, and how that story needed to get out there, they felt there was an opportunity to make a real difference. "We're small business owners ourselves, and like others we have been worried about the impacts all this uncertainty will have on our business, both directly and indirectly. Our work is something that can actually help, and while not every small business can afford it, we were looking for a way to contribute meaningfully to a large number of people. Collaborating with AFPA, our work's impact could be dramatically amplified." says Jean-Marc. "One extra client vs one less can mean the difference between surviving and shutting down, and we want our storytelling to help it be the former for our colleagues in business."
Their collaboration is a win-win-win: AFPA is getting their story told, to support their members, in exchange for some awareness for Studio Lumen - another small business of course, looking to survive these tough times. Studio Lumen is also offering another free collaboration with one more business association, as well as some reduced cost offerings for a limited time on some of their most popular standard services.
Working together, Albertans (and all Canadians) can pull together to grow and thrive, despite the challenges thrown their way.
