NANAIMO, BC - June 2025

The Tale of Strong Roots is the debut picture book by Ukrainian grandmother Valentyna Miliohlova, who fled the war with her family and now lives on Vancouver Island, Canada. Published in both Ukrainian and English by Maple Deer Entertainment - a family-run creative studio in Nanaimo - the book is a heartfelt tribute to cultural heritage, intergenerational love, and the strength of family.

This emotionally rich story, brought to life with gentle watercolor illustrations, follows a grandmother and child as they nurture a seedling together, passing on stories and traditions from their homeland. Rooted in the folk wisdom of Odesa villages and filled with quiet warmth, The Tale of Strong Roots offers children and parents a way to talk about home, memory, and where we come from - even when we're far away.

"The Tale of Strong Roots is deeply personal to us," says daughter and producer Liubov Nazarenko. "It carries our memories across continents, preserves Ukrainian traditions, and celebrates our new life in Canada. This book was born out of both love and longing."

The book is now crowdfunding on Kickstarter to support its first print run. Backers can choose from a variety of heartfelt rewards - including limited-edition books, handmade gifts, and the chance to have their names printed inside future editions.
