Now more relevant than ever: Hall Gardner's "China-Duology"

The US-China rivalry began in 1989, the Year of the Earth Serpent. Now, 3 twelve-year cycles later, this rivalry threatens global war and dictatorship in 2025, the Year of the Wood Serpent. Each book tells a story of protest in two different worlds. In Gardner's first novel, Year of the Earth Serpent Changing Colors, Mylex H. Galvin, an American Maoist teaching English in Beijing, finally realizes that few in China still believe in Mao. Galvin witnesses the massive April-June 1989 demonstrations against the Communist regime―but cannot take a side.
After the June 1989 nation-wide repression, Galvin returns to his DC beltway home sulking in the belief that he had inadvertently led Chia Pao-Yu, one of the Beijing student protest organizers, to be executed―after belatedly learning that his Chinese girlfriend, Mo Li, was a spy.

Unknown to Galvin, however, Chia escaped to Paris, where the French gave him a new identity. In the second novel, Year of the Horseshoe Bat―in Exile, set during the global COVID-19 pandemic 30 years later, Chia finds himself in a world that is governed by neither the Chinese, nor the Western, Zodiac. He fears death by COVID―and that Chinese authorities could still track him down.
Chia lands a job with the Foundation for Human Values Forever―a Franco-American NGO that had helped Chia and others escape China. Chia discovers that militating for human rights can be a big business―that liberal "values" appear to be just that: founded on cash.

As both the Chinese and Western worlds change colors, the country once considered the hope of "huddled masses yearning to breathe free" appears to be metastasizing into dictatorship. Chia hears the bellicose US president praise China's authoritarian leader―who represents everything that Chia had protested against in 1989. And instead of seeking peace, the 2 leaders are threatening repression and war...
