Berlin, June 17, 2025 - Lust for meat: Picture agency shows exclusive collection of historical design templates for butcher's shop windows on its website

The picture agency Quagga Illustrations is setting an extraordinary highlight: an exclusive collection of historical design templates for butcher's shop windows is now available on the website.

The collection includes high-quality chromolithographs as design templates for butcher's shops from the beginning of the 20th century, which impressively document the traditional craft and the art of product presentation in urban spaces.

A look inside the historic shop window

Shop windows have been central attractions in the urban landscape since the 19th century and not only served to present goods, but also became true "art spaces of the purchasable" (Uwe Spiekermann). Butchers' shops also used artistically designed shop windows to emphasize the freshness, quality and regionality of their products. The historical templates show classic colour combinations such as red and white, nostalgic signs, stylized animal motifs and detailed arrangements of meat products, which still serve as inspiration for modern retro design today.
inspiration for modern retro design.

"With this collection, we want to offer creatives, store owners and historians unique access to authentic design ideas that bring the decor of bygone times into the present. They fascinate and alienate and are therefore an excellent source for our changing relationship with food and animals," explains Isabel Meraner, press spokesperson for the agency.

Online collection of high-quality historical images

A small part of the collection is now available online and is suitable for the design of advertising materials as well as for exhibitions, publications and the creative redesign of modern butcher's stores. Interested parties can find detailed information on licensing and usage options on the agency's website.

Further motifs from the same series are available on request.

Quagga Illustrations is part of the company Quagga Media UG (haftungsbeschränkt). Quagga Media was founded in Berlin in 2010. In the first few years, we focused on building an image database of historical drawings/illustrations. This database currently consists of around 150,000 drawings/illustrations and covers all areas of Central European natural and cultural history. A number of by-products have been created or are still under construction, in particular databases (anniversaries, botanical and zoological names, personalities, thesauri). Since 2010, we have also been involved in the creation of digital and analog products (ebooks, apps). We have also accumulated IT expertise in the creation, digitization and use of digital collections and pass this knowledge on.
