As 'Superman' Soars Back into Theaters a New Book Explores The Rumored Curse on the Hollywood Superhero

SAN FRANCISCO, June 2025: - When tragedy befell the stars of the Superman film series, Hollywood believed a cursed placed on the film and those associated with it was delivering payback. Now, a new book explores the topic along with other "cursed" movie productions.

Curse of the Silver Screen - Tragedy & Disaster Behind the Movies (Aplomb Publishing, 2025) by author John William Law details the history behind a host of troubled film productions, including 1978's Superman. As Superman soars back into movie theaters this summer, new interest in the rumored curse on the superhero is bubbling up.

"Stories of a curse on Superman date back to the 1940s," says author John William Law. "Superman's creators Jerry Siegel and Joseph Shuster created the character while employed for DC Comics, and when the company sold the rights to Superman for crossing over into films and TV the creators were left out of profits. Siegel reportedly wrote that he would "put a curse" on those associated with the movie."

Law's research on the curse of Superman explores the many issues with bringing the superhero to the big screen and the later tragedies that impacted the lives of those who created it. "Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Marlon Brando and countless others associated with the film suffered terrible personal tragedies that some suggest came from the supposed curse."

Curse of the Silver Screen details the production of Superman, as well as other Hollywood classics like The Exorcist, Rebel Without a Cause, Poltergeist, Twilight Zone - The Movie, Cleopatra, Rosemary's Baby, Titanic, The Omen and more. First published nearly 30 years ago, the book has been reimagined and updated with an additional ten new chapters on films not covered in the first edition, as well as updates to the original stories, including Superman.

"The interesting thing is that the Superman drama has continued. Just this year more lawsuits around compensation from the use of the character were filed by the estate of Joe Schuster. So, in some ways the drama of a curse continues," notes Law. "Actually, all the films in the book have pretty fascinating stories behind them with some that are still unfolding."
