New Global Study by Owner.One Highlights Hidden Weaknesses in Wealth Succession Among HNW Families

The research uncovers widespread vulnerabilities in how high-net-worth (HNW) families manage wealth handovers, pointing to significant risks of capital leakage during succession.

Titled "Penguin Analytics 2025: Succession Risk and Asset Continuity," the report is based on responses from 13,500 wealth holders and inheritors across 29 countries. The findings show that nearly 75% of affluent families experience asset loss during transitions, with an average capital shrinkage of 31%, not due to external market forces but because of internal disorganization-fragmented records, undefined inheritance strategies, and lack of digital readiness.

Among the most striking insights:

Just 6% of respondents had a clearly defined inheritance structure

87.1% reported inadequate or partially organized capital documentation

76% of heirs cited confusion and inaction as barriers at the time of inheritance

Over 70% agreed that digital tools are now essential to effective wealth transition

The study also tracked adoption of tech-enabled succession mechanisms. Families using features such as encrypted vaults, automated data triggers, and structured readiness planning were more than 3x as likely to formalize or complete their transfer strategies.
