Stronger Together: Pay-What-You-Can Cafés Across the U.S. Are Sharing Ideas-And Transforming Communities

Greenfield, MA - In kitchens and dining rooms across the country, a quiet revolution is unfolding-one built not on profit, but on trust, generosity, and shared meals. At the heart of this movement are pay-what-you-can (PWYC) cafés like Stone Soup Café in Greenfield, Massachusetts, which is now deepening connections with other like-minded cafés to exchange ideas, support one another, and expand the impact of this community-centered model.

In recent months, Stone Soup has been reaching out to PWYC cafés nationwide to learn about their successes, share best practices, and strengthen a network of mutual support. One such connection-with The Knead Community Café in New Kensington, Pennsylvania-sparked an exciting new initiative at Stone Soup.
"We were inspired by how Kevin and Mary Bode and the team at The Knead Cafe works with local businesses, families, churches, and other organizations to sponsor meals and events," says Jansyn Thaw, Development Director with Stone Soup. "We realized we could lean into that model in Greenfield-and it's already having an impact."

As a result, Stone Soup expanded its own sponsorship opportunities, inviting community members and organizations to directly support meals and events with monetary donations but also by staffing the sponsored events with teams of volunteers. This support has made possible the launch of Community Soup Night-a monthly, pay-what-you-can evening meal that has quickly become a cherished gathering.

The connection is more than organizational-it's also personal. Michael Phillips, a board member at Stone Soup Café, is originally from New Kensington, PA, where The Knead Cafe is based. Now living in Greenfield, he helped spark the dialogue between the two cafés.

"It's a beautiful example of Mutual Aid," Phillips adds. "We are learning from each other and growing stronger together. Seeing two communities I care about connecting in the interest of serving others is powerful stuff" Phillips says. "The Knead Cafe has become a hub for the community and has helped bring New Kensington back to life."

These collaborations underscore the unique power of PWYC cafés: rooted in local relationships but strengthened through national solidarity. As economic pressures mount and traditional food systems face strain, these cafés are proving that communities can-and will-show up for one another.

Stone Soup Café is now launching a national effort to connect pay-what-you-can cafés by documenting and sharing what makes each unique. Once funded, the project will capture the success stories, strategies, and operations of 20+ mutual aid cafés across the East Coast and Midwest-creating a public platform (usamutualaid.com) with videos, training resources, and tools to foster collaboration, elevate grassroots solutions, and strengthen the mutual aid movement nationwide.

"This is mutual aid in action," Jansyn says. "We're learning, adapting, and evolving together. The more we share, the more we all thrive."
