Some of the key facts of the Down Syndrome Market Report:
The Down Syndrome market size in 2023 was approximately USD 241 million in the United States.
Down Syndrome is a genetic condition caused by an error in cell division called "nondisjunction," resulting in an individual having a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21. This additional genetic material alters development, leading to the physical and intellectual characteristics associated with Down Syndrome.
In 2023, the United States accounted for nearly 220,000 prevalent cases of Down Syndrome.
Down Syndrome is more common in females than males.
The types of Down Syndrome include Trisomy 21, Robertsonian translocation, and Mosaicism. In 2023, among all types, Trisomy 21 accounted for the highest number of prevalent cases in the 7MM.
In March 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the expansion of Inspire® therapy to include pediatric patients with Down syndrome aged 13 to 18 who suffer from moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This approval allows for the use of the Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation (UAS) system in adolescents who have an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) between 10 and 50 and who cannot tolerate or benefit from continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. The device is implanted near the collarbone and uses mild stimulation to keep the airway open during sleep, providing an alternative treatment option for this patient group.
There is no single, standard treatment for Down Syndrome. Treatments are based on each individual's physical and intellectual needs, as well as their strengths and limitations. People with Down Syndrome can receive proper care while living at home and in the community.
In February 2021, the ICOD project received funding of EUR 6 million from the European Commission in order to finance the clinical development of AEF0217 for the treatment of cognitive deficits linked to Down Syndrome.
Down syndrome companies working in the market are AC Immune, Annovis, Alzheon, OPKO Health, Aelis Farma, and others are developing therapies which will boost the down syndrome treatment market.
The Global Down Syndrome Foundation notes that rare forms of Down Syndrome-translocation and mosaic Down Syndrome-make up less than 6% of cases, where either not all chromosomes are triplicated or only some cells carry the extra chromosome. In 2023, there were nearly 220,000 people living with Down Syndrome in the United States. When broken down by age groups (0-18, 19-40, 41-60, and over 60), the 0-18 age group represented the largest number of cases in the U.S.
Key Down Syndrome companies such as AC Immune, Annovis Bio, Alzheon, OPKO Health, Inc., Aelis Farma, and others are evaluating new drugs for Down Syndrome to improve the treatment landscape.
Promising Down Syndrome therapies include AEF0217, ACI-24.060, and others.
Down Syndrome Overview
Down Syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by a cell division error known as "nondisjunction," which leads to the presence of a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21. This surplus genetic material affects development, resulting in the physical and intellectual traits typical of Down Syndrome. The condition occurs in three main forms: Trisomy 21, Translocation Down Syndrome, and Mosaic Down Syndrome. Trisomy 21, the most common form, involves an extra chromosome 21 in every cell and accounts for over 90% of cases. Each form has distinct features and varying levels of severity, contributing to the wide range of symptoms seen in individuals with the disorder.
Down Syndrome Market Outlook
Down Syndrome (DS) is the most common genetic cause of intellectual disability, resulting from an extra copy of chromosome 21. Individuals with DS show a range of symptoms affecting multiple body systems, with variability between cases. Diagnosis is confirmed through karyotyping in newborns suspected of having DS, and genetic counseling is recommended for families.
There is no single treatment for DS, but various therapies support individuals in reaching their potential. These include physical therapy for motor skills, occupational therapy for daily living skills, speech therapy for communication, special education, behavioral counseling for coexisting conditions, social activities, and regular health monitoring for related medical issues.
Several new therapies, including AEF0217 and ACI-24.060, are currently undergoing early and mid-stage clinical trials to explore potential treatments for Down Syndrome.
