In June 2024, Blue Shield of California terminated Tosha Lara-Larios, who had served as interim Vice President, Chief Medical Officer, and Medical Director of Medical Management and Accreditation. According to news reports, the dismissal followed allegations that she misrepresented her name and licensure, including being listed as a doctor of osteopathic medicine despite no record of licensure with the Osteopathic Medical Board of California.
"Incidents like this serve as a critical reminder that resume lies can have far-reaching consequences," says Fard. "Even if the fabrication isn't caught immediately, it can surface later-jeopardizing a person's entire career."
Resume fraud is not uncommon. According to background screening firm HireRight, 35% of screenings uncover discrepancies in educational credentials alone.
Common resume fabrications include:
- Listing a degree without completing graduation requirements
- Claiming in-demand skills without proficiency
- Manipulating employment dates to hide gaps or previous employers
- Inflating academic performance
- Fabricating job titles or responsibilities
- Falsifying achievements
- Misreporting salary history
Fard urges job seekers to present their qualifications truthfully and work with professionals when in doubt. "Honesty builds trust. A strong, well-written resume can still position you competitively without resorting to misrepresentation."
