75 years of Rolf Möller - A life for restoration, art and monument preservation

Tribute to the graduate restorer, designer and namesake of the Romoe network

Erfurt, May 2025 - On May 22, 2025, the Thuringian restorer Rolf Möller celebrates his 75th birthday. With his decades of work in the field of restoration, his creative flair and his profound craftsmanship, Rolf Möller is one of the most influential personalities in German monument conservation.

After completing his apprenticeship as a painter and varnisher with artisan and restorer Walter Möller (1966-1968), Rolf Möller studied at the University of Applied Sciences for Advertising and Design in Berlin/Potsdam (1968-1971), specializing in architectural and interior design. He completed his diploma thesis at the Martin Luther University in Halle on the staircase with a concept for conservation measures. In 1996, his degree was recognized as Diplom-Designer / Restaurator (FH) under the Unification Treaty. In addition, he successfully passed the examination to become a master painter in 1975.

Since then, he has been responsible for numerous important projects in which he uncovered, documented, restored and secured art-historical substance for the long term.

The outstanding stages of his work include, among others:

* Wartburg Castle near Eisenach - restoration of colored room settings
* Wilhelmsburg Castle, Schmalkalden - wall and ceiling finishes
* Market church in Halle/Saale - uncovering and conserving Gothic building fabric
* Weilburg Castle (Hesse) - examination of findings and room furnishings
* Erfurt Cathedral - restoration of vaults and walls
* Haus zum Sonneborn (wedding house), Erfurt - sgraffiti, Renaissance plank room and documentation of the façade

Rolf Möller is currently working in the historic church in the village of Waldau near Schleusingen in Thuringia. There he discovered and secured an original gallery painting from 1603 - a Renaissance version that had not been visible for centuries. Through his careful analysis, uncovering and documentation, this hidden treasure has been made accessible to the public and researchers once again.
