High-Performance Multi-Orbit Satcom User Terminal "Made in Austria"
Vienna/Graz - A pioneering research project is taking European space technology to the next level. The European Space Agency (ESA), together with the Austrian Aerospace Agency (ALR/FFG) and the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure are supporting an Austrian consortium in developing innovative satellite communication (Satcom) technology. The project, called Multibeam Ka-band Satellite User Terminal (MUKAS), is funded through the ESA ARTES Core Competitiveness programme. The participating partners are JOANNEUM RESEARCH Forschungsgesellschaft mbH (Graz), S+K Consult, and Vienna-based high-tech antenna specialist PIDSO - Propagation Ideas & Solutions GmbH.
The project's core objective is the development of a next-generation multi-orbit Satcom user terminal, optimized for seamless operation across all common satellite constellations: GEO (geostationary), MEO (medium Earth orbit), and LEO (low Earth orbit). The terminal is designed to deliver maximum transmission performance and reliability, while impressing with a modular design and compact form factor suitable for both stationary and mobile applications.
Currently undergoing a multi-stage development process, the project unites scientific excellence, advanced engineering, and strong collaboration between research and industry. For Austria, this initiative marks a technological milestone - both in terms of global visibility and the strategic strengthening of national expertise in the space sector.
PIDSO contributes its extensive know-how in high-performance antennas and wireless communication, acquired through years of experience in the aerospace, automotive, and research industries. "We are proud to take this next technological leap in satellite communication together with ESA. This partnership is both a great honour and a strong motivation," says DI Dr. Christoph Kienmayer, Managing Director of PIDSO. Since 2017, PIDSO has been part of the Riedel Group, based in Wuppertal, Germany.
Founded in 1975, ESA is Europe's central space agency, responsible for missions ranging from climate monitoring to interplanetary exploration. Its collaboration with forward-looking technology companies like PIDSO demonstrates its commitment to advancing Europe's leadership in space innovation.
With united strength and pioneering vision, this project brings high-tech 'Made in Austria' to the global stage - and a piece of the future closer to Earth.
