Last year, 40 Clubhouses in 18 states participated in the Week of Action, hosting panel discussions with electeds, publishing local editorials, holding a community tour and picnic, and much more. The Advocacy Open House will be on Thursday, May 22nd from 12 pm to 3 pm at the BIND Clubhouse located in Plano, TX. The event's focus is on educating and engaging elected officials, community members, and local business leaders to increase public funding and support for holistic, community-based mental health care, including the Clubhouse Model of psychosocial rehabilitation. Members receiving services will give tours of the clubhouse and provide testimony about their experiences. The organization will also be screening their short film, "Path to Purpose." For more information, or to RSVP, visit www.thebind.org.
Clubhouses (https://www.fountainhouse.org/about/clubhouse-model) which were first pioneered in the 1940s by Fountain House, are community-based nonprofits that empower people impacted by serious mental illness to take control of their recovery and thrive through access to opportunities for employment, socialization, education, skill development, housing, and improved wellness. Everything at the Clubhouse is free and voluntary, centering people's dignity, agency, and choice as an essential part of their health and well-being. There are more than 370 Clubhouses now serving communities across the world.
Much like persons living with serious mental illness, people with acquired brain injury oftentimes face difficulty returning to their communities after discharging from the hospital or rehabilitation and must navigate how to receive continued services on their own. Brain injury clubhouses are a supportive peer environment where members can regain work and volunteer skills, increase self-esteem (https://www.braininjuryclubhouses.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/IBICA-Featured-in-Challenge-Fall-2018.pdf), build cognitive & physical endurance (https://repository.escholarship.umassmed.edu/server/api/core/bitstreams/4cb424bc-e2e4-4d26-b0cb-014b18653e90/content), and develop meaningful social relationships. There are 17 brain injury clubhouses around the world.
