Titanique was initially performed in December 2017 at Los Angeles' Sorting Room Theater as a one-off. After receiving positive feedback and following two mini runs in New York in 2018, a fully staged Off-Broadway production opened at The Asylum Theatre in June 2022, and subsequently transferred to the Daryl Roth Theatre. The London production of the show marks the European premiere of Titanique.
Titanique features the songs of Celine Dion and is based on James Cameron's 1997 blockbuster movie Titanic - winner of 11 Academy Awards, and one of the highest-grossing movies of all time - and charts the real-life tragedy when Titanic - the "unsinkable" ship - collided with an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, sinking the vessel with an estimated 1,500 people perishing at sea on 15 April 1912.
The iconic film centres on a fictional romance between an impoverished, upper-class girl, Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet), and penniless American artist Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio). The pair fall passionately in love during the voyage despite the class difference, against the spectacular ocean setting, and even more dramatic tragedy. The romantic storyline remains present throughout the musical with numerous comic twists, including Canadian singer Celine Dion, who sang the unforgettable anthem "My Heart Will Go On" in the movie, is always on hand to tell us what actually happened!
Titanique features a selection of hit songs from the back catalogue of Celine Dion and a book by Marla Mindelle, Tye Blue, and Constantine Rousouli. Mindelle is a writer, actress, and composer who has starred on Broadway in Cinderella and Sister Act and created the role of Celine Dion in Titanique. Blue is a music, television, events, and theatre producer who has worked on four series of RuPaul's Drag Race. Rousouli created the role of Jack Dawson in the show.
Titanique has scooped several Lucille Lortel Awards - recognising excellence in Off-Broadway productions - including Best Musical and Best New Musical from the Off-Broadway Alliance Award. The show has proved to be a hit on this side of the pond, too, with tickets to Titanique in London [https://theatretickets-london.co.uk/shows/titanique/] at the Criterion Theatre being in big demand, and the show extending its current West End run until at least January 4, 2026.
