Green innovation revolutionizing the wallpaper industry
EcodecoTM – the environmentally friendly base material for a new generation of wallpapersWith its newly developed EcodecoTM, the Lithuanian company Veika brings more sustainability to one’s own four walls, at the same time giving an important impulse for the entire industry. EcodecoTM looks like a conventional vinyl wallpaper combining its positive characteristics, however, it is PVC-free and manages without chemical plasticizers or harmful additives. A sustainable innovation which now is also arriving at the German market. Several manufacturers will be presenting wallpapers based on EcodecoTM for the first time at Heimtextil 2017.
Environmentally friendly alternative to PVC wallpapers
Most modern wallpapers are manufactured using plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as this material offers a good scope for design, is wear-resistant and washable. However, PVC can be harmful for the environment and health. Therefore, it is gradually replaced by different solutions in many other product groups such as food packaging, medical instruments, children toys etc.
“With EcodecoTM, for the first time a technology is now also available to wallpaper manufacturers with which functional, washable and printable wallpapers can be produced without harmful chemicals”, says Dr. Aleksey Etin, the founder of EcodecoTM technology from Veika. “And all this at the same price level.” As a base material for sustainable wallpapers, EcodecoTM is produced from an environmentally friendly polymer composite material which is absolutely harmless. The contained components are also used for food packages or children’s toys.
Sustainable production and healthy living
PVC wallpapers are composed of up to 40% liquid phthalate plasticizers and dilutants to soften the otherwise hard PVC. About 20% of these liquid components migrate – i.e. vaporize – already in the process of production. Part of the vapors produced is reabsorbed by the material resulting in the classic, pungent smell of vinyl wallpapers. A second migration takes place creepingly after the wallpaper is attached in the house. The EcodecoTM materials, on the other hand, do not contain any liquid components and are therefore absolutely migration-free. This means an environmentally friendly production, healthy and odor-free living and an environment-sparing disposal – because wallpapers made of EcodecoTM material are fully recyclable.
Driver of growth in the industry
Currently, vinyl wallpapers constitute vast majority of the total wallpaper sale in Europe. However, the industry is in a difficult phase, sales continue to stagnate and for years, there has not been any real innovation in the market. “EcodecoTM can become the key to new growth for the entire industry”, thus Dr. Etin. „Because this material offers manufacturers and consumers a real alternative with notable advantages, at the same time matching the customers’ desire for a green and healthy lifestyle.” Advantages which many manufacturers have already realized. Victoria Stenova, Rasch, Grandeco and Erismann already trust EcodecoTM and will be presenting collections made of this innovative material for the first time at the Heimtextil in Frankfurt.
