Bringing satellite broadband to the edge of the map - and beyond
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Global satellite internet provider Starlink continues its exponential growth trajectory, with subscriber numbers doubling every six months for the past year. As of April 2025, the service has reached 5.5 million global subscribers, up from just 2.69 million in April 2024 and 1.39 million in early 2023, according to the latest data reviewed by Idem Est Advisory & Research.
This surge in adoption is driven by Starlink's rapid market entry into new geographies, most notably Indonesia and the newly launched Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where high demand for reliable, low-latency internet has been met with swift deployment. Regions such as Africa and Asia have seen sharp rises, with Africa now accounting for over 377,000 subscribers and Asia nearing 873,000-a nearly 20x increase since 2021.
"We're witnessing a transformational shift in global connectivity. Starlink's accelerated rollout across underserved regions is unlocking access for millions," said Landry Fevre, Managing Director of Idem Est Advisory & Research.
Importantly, this growth is primarily fuelled by new country launches rather than further penetration in mature markets. Idem Est notes that subscriber growth in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and much of Western Europe-where Starlink has been available since 2021-is beginning to plateau, signalling the onset of natural market saturation. This suggests the company's near-term momentum will increasingly depend on securing regulatory approvals and launching services in untapped or underserved countries.
Looking ahead, Idem Est forecasts that while this pace of growth will moderate in the second half of 2025, Starlink is still expected to reach 7 million subscribers globally by year-end. Key to this continued expansion will be upcoming launches in Bangladesh, Vietnam, and India, where regulatory approval is progressing and infrastructure buildout is underway.
However, Idem Est also warns of growing misuse of Starlink's roaming feature, which is reportedly being exploited to provide service in unauthorized markets such as Gambia, Cameroon, Sudan, Myanmar, and Venezuela, bypassing national regulations.
"This grey-market usage of roaming poses a regulatory risk and could undermine Starlink's credibility with national governments," Landry Fevre added. "Stronger geofencing and compliance measures will be essential to preserve long-term market access."
Idem Est Advisory & Research continues to monitor Starlink's performance, market entry strategies, and regulatory positioning globally.
