Measles also referred to as morbilli or rubeola is an infection caused by virus known as paramyxovirus which belongs to genus morbillivirus. Measles is an infection of immune system, respiratory system and skin. Measles is commonly a disease of children and in most of the developed countries children are immunized against measles by the age of 18 months. Measles vaccines are generally part of MMR vaccine (mumps, measles and rubella) vaccine. The vaccination is generally not prescribed before 18 months as sufficient amount of immunoglobulins are acquired by the new born through mother’s placenta. A second dose of vaccine is usually administered during the age of four and five, to increase the rate of immunity. However, in developing countries two doses of measles vaccination are prescribed at the age of six months and two months.
