Kyung Hee University Launches Global Research Center

Kyung Hee University officially opened the Global Research Center for Quantum Materials in November 2024 to strengthen Korea's leadership in quantum science. The ceremony was held at the former College of Science and attended by Nobel Laureate Professor Konstantin Novoselov, who also serves as the Center's director. "I'm excited to join this journey toward the future of quantum research," he said.

President Jinsang Kim emphasized the significance of quantum science as a future-defining field and affirmed Kyung Hee's role in leading global research. "With the launch of this Center and the appointment of top-tier scholars, Kyung Hee is securing its position in quantum innovation," he stated.

Key figures including Seoul Deputy Mayor Byung-min Kim and Sangwook Han, President of the Quantum Information Society of Korea, delivered congratulatory remarks, noting the importance of quantum technology in Korea's national development and Seoul's strategic investment in R&D and talent.

The Center is led by Professors Novoselov and Philip Kim, with faculty members from physics, mathematics, chemistry, and applied physics. Their goal is to create a quantum ecosystem in Korea, focusing on next-gen quantum materials, device development, and research platforms.

Two special lectures followed the ceremony. Professor Sang Wook Kim delivered "Quantum Physics for Everyone," introducing concepts like superposition and quantum computing. He emphasized the transformative power of quantum technology and its potential to change industries.

Professor Novoselov then gave a lecture titled "Materials for the Future," highlighting the role of advanced materials like graphene and the integration of AI in materials science. He introduced innovations such as self-healing materials and intelligent systems that mimic living organisms. The professor concluded by stating that the Center will be a key platform driving Korea's leadership in quantum research and global science innovation.
