Special Olympics Singapore Athletes to Play Better, Safer

Athletes from the Special Olympics Singapore get fitted with foot orthotics to help improve sports performance and reduce occurrence of sports related injuries.

SINGAPORE, March 18, 2008 – Special Olympics Singapore athletes will get fitted today with foot orthotics to help them perform better at sports and help lower the risk of sports related injuries.

Some 20 athletes will be fitted by Back2Sports physiotherapists with customised foot orthotics. These foot orthotics will help correct bio-mechanical problems of the foot allowing the muscles, tendons and bones of the feet and lower legs to function more effectively. Enabling the athletes to run faster and jump higher in their sports.

The foot orthotics will also help reduce the occurrence of sports related injuries. Bio-mechanical problems with the feet can affect the functioning of other parts of the body, including the hips, knees, and back.

An example with flat feet, the foot is unable to sufficiently cushion the shock from a foot fall. The excess shock is transferred up the leg to the lower back; straining the muscles in the lower back causing back pain.

This problem is magnified for athletes who land harder with each foot fall compared to an average person walking. Walking places up to 1.5-times a person’s body weight on the foot. Running ups that figure to 3-times.

The orthotic fitting, jointly supported by Back2Sports and F1 Recreation - a consultancy and out-fitting provider of sports, recreation and fitness facilities, is worth approximately S$3,600.

The athletes will be fitted at Back2Sports’s Foot Orthotic Road show on Tuesday, 18th March 2008 at 2:30pm. The Foot Orthotics Road show will be held at the atrium of Velocity@Novena from 18th till 22nd March 2008 from 11am to 7pm daily.
