Frankfurt based aviation consulting boutique aviationexperts PCS has launched a platform to develop new, digital concepts for the future of airline operations.

"Digitization is everywhere these days, and there are amazing opportunities for airlines", says Benjamin Walther, Managing Director of the firm.

"When we talk to airlines, we feel that there is a certain awareness for these opportunities. However, most carriers are extremely hesitant when it comes to really embrace new technologies."

"We see that especially the big groups like KLM, Air France, Lufthansa or IAG have started first digital initiatives, but mainly focused on passenger experience, social media or mobile connectivity".

Walther points out that the potential for increasing the performance of the core business of an airline - its operational value chain - is widely underestimated:

"Many airlines are stuck in the 80s or 90s with regards to processes, information management and technological setup of their operations value chain. We want to show them how digitized processes and digital tools can help them make better operational decisions, based on ultra-efficient procedures, and with a maximum of situational awareness."

The #FutureOpsLab is a dedicated organizational unit within the firm and provides a structured methodical approach to identify, develop and test new concepts for the operational value chain of airlines.

A team of consultants will conduct research, talk to tech innovators, start-ups, space agencies and military organizations to identify trends.

"The result of our work can be everything: a fully automated IOCC platform, Virtual Reality use cases for airlines or advanced Data Analytics solutions", says Joern Romberg, Head of Business Development at the German firm.

"We really want airlines go where no man has gone before - like in Star Trek. Referencing a SciFi series might be a bit over the top of course. But it's a perfect analogy for what we do: create solutions where others give up, and find new ways of doing things. By stretching the boundaries of traditional innovation thinking."

To share the results of the #FutureOpsLab with airlines, aviationexperts offers a new, tailored in-house workshop called #FutureOpsLab Bootcamp starting in 2017.
