Transdermal Prescription Gels Finding Opportunity in Niche Aging Markets

12-15-2016 10:45 AM CET | Health & Medicine

Press release from: Greystone Research Associates

(Amherst, NH) – There are currently more than three dozen approved transdermal prescription gel drug products. Transdermal gel systems for delivering systemic therapeutics are attractive to drug developers and formulators because they address some of the shortcomings associated with transdermal patch products. Advances in the areas of excipients, drug solubility and transdermal dosing are attracting new players and investors. Growth in this sector will also be driven by the pressure to extend market protection for numerous drugs with soon-to-expire patents, as well as Rx-to-OTC switching.

Major companies now focus on life cycle management of their products to maximize return on investment and often consider phased product improvement opportunities to maintain competitiveness against other major companies or generic competition. As part of this effort, pharmaceutical manufacturers seek to differentiate delivery characteristics of their products to defend against generic competition. Available options include alternate routes of administration or a novel formulation that offers convenience or improved dosage schedules. As gel technology is applied to existing drugs and as gel formulations become a route of choice for the administration of new NCEs, we expect the application space to evolve to include chronic systemic therapeutics that are currently underserved by existing treatments.

Growth in the market for transdermal prescription gels will be influenced by external factors that are outside the control of market participants. Testosterone gel, currently the largest single prescription gel product segment, is hampered by an image that it is not a serious therapeutic product due to the significant level of advertising for questionable products that are promoted for questionable uses. Marketers must also deal with the perception about topical gels that they are inconvenient to use, may stain clothes and leave a residue on skin.

A new research study, Transdermal Prescription Gels: Products, Players Markets and Forecasts analyzes approved and development-stage prescription gel products, profiles market participants, and assesses key demand and technology factors influencing the commercial market and shaping growth in this sector.
