U.S. Consumer Product Safety Testing Market

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Testing Market

Consumer product safety testing is a practice to inspect, examine, evaluate, and certify products by ensuring they cater to the safety standards. The major organizations that regulate various types of testing are the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

A wide range of analyses is involved in this process that helps to mitigate potential risks associated with the products such as electrical, fire, chemical, and mechanical hazards. Once the safety standards are met, the products receive a written or electronic certificate, demonstrating necessary criteria are met by the certifying body. Product safety testing procedures in the U.S. not only ensure safety but also help to meet legal compliance, protect brand reputation, save costs, and ensure customer satisfaction. As a result, robust safety testing methods are mandatory to help reduce injuries and prevent death among consumers. According to Allied Market Research, the U.S. consumer product safety testing market is estimated to account for $10,546.4 million by 2030 from $7,453.5 million in 2020, exhibiting a CAGR of 3.6% from 2021 to 2030.

Product Accreditation in the U.S.

Many product safety regulations are implemented by the U.S. for electrical and electronic devices. For instance, the FCC logo is obligatory for electronic devices sold or manufactured in the U.S. This mark validates that the electromagnetic radiation emitted from the device is below the levels stipulated by the Federal Communications Commission.

Furthermore, some states in the U.S. have enforced their own laws that are applicable merely for their jurisdiction. These regulations generally differ from the federal laws, which might create challenges in terms of compliance and production standardization. For example, through programs such as the Appliance Efficiency Regulations (Title 20) and the Opt-in Certification program, the California Energy Commission attests a variety of products like building equipment, appliances, and power plants for their energy efficiency. Electrical and electronic products for the U.S. are also certified by the Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), which is recognized by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Presently, OSHA grants recognition to 17 organizations, which determines that products accredited by these organizations meet safety regulatory requirements of OSHA.

Tests Conducted to Ensure Product Safety

Consumer product safety testing in the U.S. is not only a mandatory requirement but also a crucial measure to ensure product reliability and consumer protection against potential hazards. Several consumer goods such as electronics, furniture, food packaging, and toys consist of toxic components which are unknown to the general public. Limited awareness about these toxins raises alarming concerns among children, infants, and pregnant women. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that approximately 12.7 million individuals were admitted in emergency departments due to injuries from consumer products in 2023. Furthermore, the National Fire Protection Association records around 37,000 fire breakouts every year in industrial or manufacturing facilities, which result in 18 deaths and 279 injuries, reaching nearly $1 billion in property damage. As a result, the U.S. Government has enforced stringent monitoring regulations to ensure the safety and reliability of consumer products.

A wide range of tests are carried out to confirm that consumer products are safe and dependable for use. These tests include mechanical and safety function, electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and chemical compliance. In mechanical and safety function testing, machines are strictly scrutinized to ensure that workers are not injured by squeezing, pinching, crushing, or in any other manner. In addition, safety features such as safety hatches, emergency stop buttons, automatic shut-off mechanisms, proximity sensors, and audible and visual alarms are checked if they are operating properly. On the other hand, to safeguard individuals from exposure to electrical hazards such as electric shock, short circuits, exposed wires, electrocution, and overloaded circuits, products are tested under normal use, potential faults, and improper operating conditions. Moreover, temperatures of different components are monitored to prevent overheating and fire hazards. Flammability testing is carried out for plastic products to make sure they do not facilitate fire spread.

Electromagnetic compatibility is evaluated by confirming that a product functions properly in three different conditions without being affected by electromagnetic interference, including emission testing, immunity testing, and conducted and radiated tests. Emission testing involves measuring the electromagnetic waves emitted by the device and ensuring they do not interfere with other electronics. On the contrary, in immunity testing, the device is exposed to external electromagnetic signals to check if it operates correctly without disruption. Furthermore, conducted and radiated tests evaluate the susceptibility of a device to electromagnetic interference by measuring disturbances transmitted through power cables (conducted) and air (radiated) to ensure proper functioning in various electromagnetic environments. Moreover, chemical compliance is evaluated through various regulatory testing organizations and certifications such as the Food and Drug Administration, the Toxic Substances Control Act, and the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act. As a result, all these tests collectively contribute to determine whether consumer products are safe and reliable for public health.

Consumer product safety testing is carried out stringently in the U.S. Products undergo safety testing regulations put forth by organizations such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Various tests are performed to assess the safety and reliability of the products, which include electrical safety, mechanical and safety function, chemical compliance, and electromagnetic compatibility. With alarming increase in injuries and deaths in the U.S. caused by product failures and fire breakouts, the need for consumer product safety testing has increased considerably and is expected to grow further as regulatory standards get stringent and manufacturers focus on developing safer, more reliable products.
