Reducing Harmful Algae Blooms with Bioremediation

Reducing Harmful Algae Blooms with Bioremediation

Across the United States, the combination of excessive nutrient runoff, rising temperatures, and more frequent storms and droughts are accelerating Harmful Algae Blooms (HABs) in freshwater lakes and ponds. HABs represent wide-ranging, negative impacts on native wildlife, domestic animals, and even humans.

Hydralife Solutions, a Colorado-based startup, is dedicated to limnologists, lake/pond owners, and water managers seeking natural solutions to nutrient control and toxic and nuisance algae reduction while promoting wellness in aquatic ecosystems.

Hydralife provides water managers the opportunity to utilize the power of good algae as a tool to address major challenges including excess nutrients, HABs, unsightly filamentous algae and low productivity of water bodies.

As the only provider of live beneficial bulk phytoplankton on the market, Hydralife offers an unparalleled, sustainable alternative to chemically treating ponds and lakes.

Founded in 2024, Hydralife Solutions has partnered with the city and county of Denver in enhancing water quality while simultaneously reducing costs and dependency on chemical algaecides.

"We grow wonderful algae." Ryan Philipsborn, Founder of Hydralife. "We have the privilege of working with the dedicated, helpful water managers across our country." Holding over 10 years experience working with aquaculture, Ryan is thrilled to be able to support water resource managers with sustainable solutions.

At City Park Golf Course in Denver, Hydralife's customized bioremediation strategies neutralized nitrogen levels in effluent water, transforming harmful ammonia into a nutrient-rich, biostimulant irrigation source that revitalized both water and soil ecosystems.

Bioremediation Through Beneficial Organisms

The foundation of Hydralife's programs is live beneficial phytoplankton-single-celled algae that consumes excess nitrogen and phosphorus. These two elements are usually seen in the form of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and phosphorus and they fuel unwanted algae. Hydralife's beneficial phytoplankton blends compete for these nutrients, purifying water, sequestering carbon dioxide and feeding the second tier in the aquatic food chain.

With agriculture projects, residential development, and golf courses that use ponds for irrigation, phytoplankton is an excellent biostimulant, naturally rejuvenating depleted soil.

For effluent waters from water treatment facilities, phytoplankton rapidly consumes harmful ammonia, bringing effluent waters back to life.

The team at Hydralife fully believes in the power of phytoplankton to support the growing challenges to maintain municipal, regional and agricultural water bodies.

Customized for Year-Round Success

Hydralife partners with specialists to build management plans that ensure sustainable water quality throughout grow seasons and calendar year. By providing beneficial phytoplankton, Hydralife helps water managers promote healthier lakes and ponds while helping to protect the public from harmful algae blooms or nuisance algae.

Future Goals and Innovations

As a startup committed to continuous improvement, Hydralife Solutions aims to expand its impact by:
- Developing and distributing concentrated phytoplankton for use in large-scale bioremediation, agriculture, and water management applications across the nation.
- Enhancing its e-commerce platform to provide a source on the benefits of good phytoplankton and to make acquisition of bulk phytoplankton seamless.
- Continuing to develop natural solutions and collect data to assist water managers, limnologists, and agronomists with the challenges they face.

Help Us Grow Good Algae

Hydralife invites water managers, resource managers, farmers and limnologists across Colorado to join their mission to improve aquatic ecosystems through natural, science-backed solutions.

However, traditional optical microscopy methods face two major technical bottlenecks: first, inefficient manual sorting, which makes it difficult to rapidly process large quantities of samples in the field; and second, reliance on laboratory analysis, which prevents in-situ real-time monitoring and results in delayed early warning of sudden algal blooms. Algae, How It Spreads, and Algae Removal With Simple Softwash
Biloxi, MS - When most people think of algae, they think of bodies of water. For example, algae is abundant in oceans, rivers, creeks, and other similar geographic structures. However, algae does not need to be submerged in water to grow. In fact, it has a tendency to grow on the exterior surfaces of properties, too. When this happens, it can quickly leave homeowners and business owners frustrated, wondering what
