OPPORTUNITY FOR PUBLIC COMMENT

RIDGECREST, CA: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE. FEBRUARY 24, 2025, 3:00 p.m.: The Desert Tortoise Preserve Committee, Inc. (DTPC) is seeking public comment on its proposal for grant funding submitted to the California State Parks, Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Registration Division.

The public review and comment period is open MARCH 4, 2025 to 5:00 p.m. PDT on MAY 5, 2025. This period provides an opportunity for the public to review and provide comments to the Preliminary Applications submitted to the Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) Division for consideration during the G25 Grant cycle.

The DTPC's G25 Restoration application proposes to remediate OHV impacts to the Desert Tortoise Research Natural Area ("DTRNA") located in Kern County, California through (a) installing desert tortoise-exclusion fencing along 24.5 miles of existing perimeter fencing at the DTRNA and Adjacent Areas, (b) monitoring and removing invasive plant species along the project area perimeter fencing, and (c) restoring soil impacts and surface degradation related to the fence installation. The OHMVR Division manages the Grants and Cooperative Agreements Program (Grants Program). The Grants Program is an annual program that provides for well managed off-highway vehicle (OHV) recreation in the State of California by providing financial assistance to eligible agencies and organizations that develop, maintain, operate, expand, support, or contribute to well managed high-quality OHV recreation areas, roads and trails. Also as important, the Grants Program seeks to responsibly maintain the wildlife, soils, and habitat of project areas in a manner that will sustain long-term OHV recreation.

The Desert Tortoise Preserve Committee, Inc. (DTPC) is a nonprofit corporation founded in 1974 to (a) promote the welfare of the California State Reptile, Agassiz 's desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii ), in its native wild state in the southwestern United States; (b) establish and assist in establishment of preserves for the desert tortoise in its natural habitats and ecosystems; (c) provide information, education and research regarding ecosystems important for the protection of the desert tortoise and associated animal and plant species that may be included in these ecosystems; (d) develop and implement management programs for preserves, including other land associated with any preserve, to protect the desert tortoise and the biodiversity of its native wild ecosystems; and (e) foster and publicize the uses for these preserves for selected forms of recreation, education, conservation and research.
