CreativeJunkFood Channels the Resilience of Black Historical

WASHINGTON, D.C. - February 1, 2025: CreativeJunkFood, a multimedia creative studio based in Washington, D.C., has always found it key to celebrate Black people's contributions to
the United States through creative work. And, for this year's Black History Month, the studio is acknowledging Black historical figures who serve as inspiration on overcoming adversity amid hardships through the recent unveiling of two major projects, the Go-Go Museum and the Marion Barry Legacy Public Arts Project.

The company faced its share of challenges in completing the projects when Candice Taylor, the co-founder of CreativeJunkFood, suffered a massive stroke in June 2023. Overnight, the company shifted from a two-person operation to a solo endeavor. It was so devastating that the studio was at risk of shutting down and forever changed Candice and fellow co-founder Nabeeh Bilal's lives.

"We were juggling multiple projects at the time, and it was very busy for us, then boom, I was out," Taylor said. "I had to learn to walk, talk, and be myself all over again. It was tough then
and still tough today, but Nabeeh stepped up and took care of everything. I can't thank him enough for that."

Through their journey of perseverance, CreativeJunkFood shared they drew inspiration from Black creative figures such as Gordon Parks, a pivotal photographer during the Civil Rights Era; and Audre Lorde, a poet and activist who experienced racial discrimination and segregation. Learning from Parks and Lorde motivated Creative JunkFood to push forward and use their own artistry to make an impact in the Black community, despite the hardships and adversity to complete the Go-Go Museum and the Marion Barry Legacy Public Arts Project.

For the Go-Go Museum, CreativeJunkFood conceptualized and designed the exhibits and immersive design spaces,, such as the roll call wall and the stairwell. The company also
collaborated with the museum's founder, Ron Moten, and curator, Dr. Natalie Hopkinson, to provide consulting on the museum's branding and technology. Prior to establishing the Go-Go Museum as a physical location, the company designed the Go-Go Bus to offer a mobile experience. The bus features a stage on top and screens inside to showcase the museum's latest and upcoming exhibits. The museum's ribbon cutting took place on Nov.18, 2024 and the museum will officially open on Feb. 19.

The Marion Barry Legacy Public Arts Project was commissioned by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. CreativeJunkFood was selected to work with the organization and the Marion Barry Legacy Jr. Foundation to conceptualize, design, and fabricate an art installation to honor former D.C. mayor, Marion Barry. The installation includes a mural, interactive kiosks and a sculpture of Barry, celebrating his impact through a political, social, and activism lens. The
installation unveiling took place on Nov. 23, 2024.

"Resilience is in the DNA of Black History," Bilal said. "The Go-Go Museum and the Marion Barry Legacy Project are two culturally impactful projects that involve stories of resilience. They exist within the fibers of Black History, and we found inspiration in their stories. Go-Go music has faced its share of adversity in this city on its way to being recognized as the city's official music. Mayor Marion Barry faced adversity many times in his life and prevailed due to his resilience. Each of these two projects involved different hardships and challenges for us to face, and they're truly part of our story."
