Ireland-China Relations: Pat McCarthy Named Ambassador

In January 2025, Pat McCarthy, Chairman of the Ireland Sino Institute (Chinese name Zhang Xiaoai 张小爱), was recognized by the Chinese Government as an Honorary Ambassador for Tourism and Culture. As part of the celebration, he embarked on a three-day tour of Liaoning Province, where he and his team explored the region's historical sites, cultural heritage, and scenic landmarks. This recognition highlights the growing strength of Ireland-China relations and the ongoing efforts to deepen cultural and tourism exchanges between the two nations.

During their tour, they visited several museums, including the Songhua Inkstone Museum in Benxi, Liaoning, where they explored the ancient craft of ink grinding. They observed how traditional inksticks are carefully ground on inkstones with water to create liquid ink, which then collects in a reservoir known as an ink pool. This cultural experience provided a deeper understanding of China's artistic heritage and strengthened ties between Irish in China and the local communities.

The Songhua inkstone, an essential tool in Chinese calligraphy, was widely used during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). As Pat McCarthy explored the museum, he reflected on the historical significance of the Qing era, remarking that he could almost feel the presence of Nurhaci, the dynasty's founding leader.
