Monday mornings feel different when you love what you do but they're still Monday mornings. They call for the strong, together, productive version of yourself to take centre stage. That morning cuppa on your way out the door to face the morning traffic and then the day's demands ask for a certain type of courage and resilience. The point is, no matter how much you love your career, downtime is the flip side of the productivity coin, you can't have one without the other but sometimes you're forced to persevere despite the tiredness.

If you're having some of those crazy 13-hour workdays before the end of the year, even small adjustments to daily habits can help you feel more in control and energized. Here are some quick strategies to help you take back your day

Release the Handbrake on Success By Mastering These Habits

The handbrake habits boggle most people, they think this is too simple to be effective. Or they believe these habits are not relevant to the struggles they're facing. Practising deep breathing, getting movement daily, and good quality hydration to create momentum is the most underrated strategy for success out there. "Handbrake habits" are foundational actions or routines that we all perform daily, like eating, breathing, sleeping, moving, and hydrating. They can either propel us forward or hold us back, depending on how well we manage them. Think of a car with the handbrake on, even though it can still move, it does so inefficiently, with resistance and strain. People want these big miracle solutions that are hyper-specific to their problems while they're neglecting all of the foundational habits. Get the basics in place and you'll be surprised at how many of your struggles seem to disappear.

The Healthy Habit Hierarchy (20 Minutes)

Knowing the handbrake habits is one thing, but integrating them requires you to know the healthy habit hierarchy. These small, high-impact habits are the on/off switch on your productivity and wellness. They're not big commitments, it takes only moments to change our physical biochemistry alongside your mindset from stuck to unstoppable.

Breathing Reset: Spend two minutes taking deep, diaphragmatic breaths. Breathing deeply calms the nervous system, sharpens focus, and energizes you.
Hydration Check: Drink a full glass of water to rehydrate and boost mental clarity, especially if you're starting to feel an afternoon slump.
Movement Break: Take a quick 5-minute walk or do a few stretches. Moving breaks up mental fatigue, improves blood flow, and gives you a fresh perspective.
Mastery: Focus on incremental progress in each area, celebrating small successes as you develop more productive habits

Set Up a "Momentum Task" (10 Minutes)

The easiest way to keep from feeling scattered is to narrow down your focus. Choose one task you've been putting off and dedicate a focused 10-minute session to make a dent in it.

Replying to a key email, organising your workspace, or anything that will give you a sense of progress. Put away any distractions, like your phone, and see this as a "Do Not Disturb" segment of your day. It's about condensing what you can do and only spending 10 minutes doing it.

Quick, doable actions like "send one overdue email" or "clear five files" give you an easy and quick dopamine release, white reducing that to-do list. Small wins help you feel accomplished and motivated.

Celebrating Progress: Take Your Silver Linings (10 minutes)

Sometimes, all you get is silver linings. Focusing on small successes is energising and helps you stay engaged, creating a sense of satisfaction and motivation to keep moving forward.

Recognise that sometimes "Done" is better than "Perfect" and celebrate the win. Behavioural experts already know that higher energy equals higher productivity, this is why successful businesses invest so heavily in building the morale of their sales teams. Be your own team-building cheerleader and build your own morale by acknowledging the effort you put in, recognising your own success, and using that to drive yourself forward. Sometimes you have to be your own biggest fan to keep yourself moving forward.
