A Response to UF Kappa Alpha Psi Members Caleb Joseph, Angel Gomez, and Omaree May: Setting the Record Straight

Statement on the Florida Invitational Step Show (FISS) Event

As a dedicated advocate for inclusivity and community at the University of Florida, I am deeply troubled by the narrative surrounding the events of last year's Florida Invitational Step Show (FISS). The characterization of me as a threat to Kappa Alpha Psi or the Black community on campus is not only inaccurate but profoundly disheartening, particularly given my longstanding commitment to inclusion.

Addressing the Allegations

It is essential to confront these allegations directly. The suggestion that my actions were racially motivated is entirely unfounded. My role as a co-founder of a Black student organization at UF (NABA) underscores my dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. To misrepresent my character in this way not only distorts the truth but also undermines the progress we have collectively worked toward as a campus community.

The events leading up to this incident have been misrepresented. This was not an unprovoked situation, as some have claimed. I was engaged in an escalating exchange with a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, during which I was repeatedly harassed for no apparent reason. Threats were made on both sides, and while I take full responsibility for my role in this conflict, it is imperative to acknowledge that this was a two-sided issue. A fair and objective assessment of the situation must consider the shared accountability of all parties involved.

Regarding the knife found in my possession, I want to clarify that I carry it regularly as a safety precaution, not as a means of intimidation or harm. Given my engagement in various extracurricular and advocacy activities, I have, at times, encountered hostility. Like many students who take personal security seriously, I have taken measures to ensure my safety. To frame this as an indication of ill intent ignores the reality that many students, particularly those in public-facing roles, sometimes face.

Commitment to the UF Community

I hold deep respect for Kappa Alpha Psi and its contributions to the UF community. Their dedication to celebrating Black culture and fostering achievement is commendable. However, the portrayal of me as an adversary disregards my own efforts to uplift communities and build a more inclusive campus. It is profoundly painful to see a community I have worked so hard to support turn against me based on a one-sided account.

While I regret that the situation escalated, I firmly believe in the importance of accountability for all individuals involved. Harassment, regardless of its source, is unacceptable. I hope that members of the fraternity will also acknowledge their role in this conflict and join me in working toward accountability and reconciliation.

Moving Forward

This experience has reinforced my belief in the power of open dialogue and mutual understanding. Despite the challenges this situation has presented, my commitment to fostering inclusivity and celebrating culture remains unwavering. My actions and advocacy speak to my values, and I will continue to uphold them.

To Caleb Joseph, Angel Gomez, Omaree May, and others, I encourage you to seek the full truth rather than accepting a singular narrative. Our community deserves transparency, and only through honest dialogue can we move forward and prevent such misunderstandings in the future.

I am not your adversary-I have stood alongside you in celebrating Black culture and advocating for equality. Let us not allow this incident to overshadow the progress we have made or divide us further. Instead, let us come together to strengthen our community and reaffirm our shared commitment to inclusivity and unity at the University of Florida.
