Making Transformative and multi-disciplinary literary events accessible to every classroom while aligning with curriculum standards.

Chevy Chase, MD/January 22, 2025
BookBreak is excited to announce their newest bestselling author talk program, which will be used in High Schools across the country starting in Fall of 2025. Renowned authors Laurie Halse Anderson, Dhonielle Clayton, Angeline Boulley, and Matt De La Peña are already booked!

Since 2023, BookBreak has successfully launched its Elementary and Middle School bestselling author talk programs connecting students with acclaimed authors, virtually while seamlessly integrating these sessions into the curriculum. The students have enjoyed meeting and hearing from authors, such as, Jeff Kinney, Mary Pope Osborne, Kate DiCamillo, Lois Lowry, Marie Lu, and Jason Reynolds.

BookBreak's mission is to ignite a fire for reading in all students and expand opportunities to deepen reading engagement. A study conducted by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) showed that pleasure reading for students continues to decline.

High School students often become less confident with reading more advanced content, which can put their academic performance at risk. Motivation is a key component of reading to learn, so optimizing a variety of pathways for piquing interest in books can have a large impact.

"As a former veteran high school teacher, my biggest struggle each year was building a classroom culture of reading. Students' reading thrives when they hear from authors and content they can identify with", says Christiana Succar, PhD, Curriculum Specialist on the BookBreak team.

A survey by Keys To Literacy found that "upwards of 40% of high school students are disengaged from learning, are inattentive, exert little effort on school work, and report being bored in school."

BookBreak's virtual author talk program for high school includes 12 live author talks, which are 30 minute in-depth interviews with bestselling authors. There are opportunities for student Q&A to increase engagement and recordings of the talks are also available on our platform for those who cannot attend live. Each talk includes comprehensive planning resources for teachers that meet curricula and state standards and provide impactful experiences that increase student excitement for learning and reading.
