Major Infrastructure Projects Discussed in Queensland

11-14-2016 06:03 PM CET | Industry, Real Estate & Construction

Press release from: Expotrade

On the 25th and 26th of October, the 2nd Annual Queensland Infrastructure Projects Conference 2016 gathered at the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre. The conference brought together over 150 key industry stakeholders, with industry professionals ranging from construction consultants, planners and developers, manufacturers, public sector representatives, road authorities and architects.
With a wide array of speakers present, delegates heard from the likes of The Hon. Peter Beattie AC, Chairman, Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth GamesTM Corporation (GOLDOC) – QLD, who discussed how the Commonwealth Games infrastructure has injected money into the South East corner, driving jobs and growth. More than 10,000 workers have so far played a role in the construction of the village. Mr Beattie emphasised that the Games are more than just a sporting event but a significant development for QLD and an opportunity to send a message to the world that the region is a leader in sustainability, tourism, trade and investment. Mr Beattie projects April 2018 as the completion date of the venues infrastructure.
Executive Director Adam Beck from the Smart Cities Council discussed the future of smart cities as highly connected and offering technological solutions that address urban challenges such as mobility. Mr Beck also stressed the importance of applying a social lens to smart cities and creating designs that work for people as metropolises should primarily be concerned with their inhabitants. Focusing on public places, Mr Beck also chartered the rise of autonomous vehicles and planning for disruption in the built environment sectors, offering big markets projections for 2019 and 2020.
Delegates also heard from Professor Paul Burton, Director – Cities Research Centre, Griffith University, who gave an urban planner’s perspective on intelligent infrastructure. Prof Burton emphasised that there were more elements and networks at play in construction than simply the limited view of infrastructure as concerning solely roads, bridges and buildings. Infrastructure, according to Mr Burton is inherently and unavoidably political as political institutions control infrastructure spending and construction. In Prof Burton’s view, as political frameworks stagnate and deteriorate, too often vast amounts of money are committed to outdated and redundant infrastructure, such as University lecture theatres. Prof Burton, as a University lecturer, observed that current teaching practice has evolved in ways that has rendered traditional large University buildings irrelevant. As students demand flexibility of learning, flexible spaces and increased connectivity, a more intelligent approach to infrastructure planning is needed.
Health precincts as physical spaces were considered at the conference by Principal of International Design and Planning Practice at HASSELL, Adam Davies. Mr Davies emphasised the clinical imperative of efficiently operating and well-designed hospitals which are expected to produce health benefits such as less use of post-operative medicines and shorter post-operative stays. Mr Davies urged that it was critical for precincts to be multi-connected, designed for transport resilience and providing choice in relation to travel throughout the city. Precincts should also provide safe and convenient modes of travel and integrate seamlessly with the city, Mr Davies concluded.
The 2nd Annual Queensland Infrastructure Projects Conference was an immersive two day experience which included keynote presentations and Q&As offering unrivalled networking and learning experiences.
