The primary function of human catalase which is also called heme containing enzyme is to break down hydrogen peroxide into two molecules of water and one of oxygen. It can breakdown 1 million molecules of hydrogen peroxide per second. The structure of erythrocyte catalase consists of four sub units with heme group in center which helps it to break down the peroxide in human cells.
