Lena Esmail, QuickMed CEO

CEO Urges Support for Women Starting Healthcare Businesses to Drive Innovation and Equity
Lena Esmail, CEO of QuickMed and a prominent voice in healthcare innovation, is rallying support for initiatives aimed at empowering women to launch healthcare businesses. Speaking at a recent event on entrepreneurship and health equity, Esmail emphasized the critical role women play in reshaping healthcare delivery and addressing gaps in access, especially in underserved communities.

"Women make up nearly 70% of the global healthcare workforce, yet they hold less than 25% of executive roles in the field," Esmail noted. "This imbalance limits the industry's potential for innovation and prevents us from tapping into diverse perspectives that are essential for solving complex healthcare challenges."

A Call for Action

Esmail is calling on policymakers, investors, and organizations to create programs that provide funding, mentorship, and education for aspiring women entrepreneurs in healthcare. She believes that these efforts will not only level the playing field but also enhance patient outcomes.

"Women often approach healthcare with a deep understanding of patient needs because so many have served on the frontlines as nurses, doctors, and caregivers," Esmail said. "We need to amplify their voices and give them the resources to turn their ideas into impactful businesses."

The Importance of Supporting Women Entrepreneurs

Research underscores the value of investing in women-led businesses. According to a Boston Consulting Group study, startups founded by women deliver 78 cents of revenue per dollar invested, compared to 31 cents for male-founded startups. Yet, women receive only 2.3% of venture capital funding annually.

"The numbers don't lie," Esmail stated. "When we invest in women, we see better outcomes. This isn't just about equity - it's about smart business and driving meaningful change in healthcare."

Esmail also highlighted the impact women entrepreneurs can have on health equity, citing that women are more likely to focus on community-based solutions and prioritize underserved populations. "We need business models that bridge gaps in care, and women are uniquely positioned to lead this charge," she added.

A Vision for the Future

As part of her advocacy, Esmail is collaborating with organizations to develop mentorship programs that connect experienced healthcare leaders with aspiring women entrepreneurs. She also plans to host workshops and networking events to foster a supportive community of innovators.

"This is a movement, not a moment," Esmail said. "By championing women in healthcare entrepreneurship, we're building a future where innovation thrives, care is equitable, and diverse perspectives drive progress."
